Sunderland midfielder Teemu Tainio is back in training as he attempts to recover from a knee injury. The Finnish international has been back in training for the last couple of days and is optimistic that he can return to Premier League action before the season ends.

It was thought that Tainio, who's career has been plagued with injuries, would need an operation to remove a cyst from his knee.

But the former Tottenham man, who last played at in Sunderland's 0-0 draw at Arsenal in February, is now hoping to avoid the surgeon's knife.

Sunderland manager Ricky Sbragia said: "Teemu has trained for the last couple of days and he seems happy with it. We just need to see if the knee holds up and go from there. If it doesn't, he will need an operation but we are hopeful."

The Black Cats resume their Premier League survival campaign this saturday when they visit West Ham.

Sbragia: "He [Tainio] won't feature in the West Ham game but he could come into contention for Manchester United," added Sbragia.
