Carlisle managed to hang onto their prized asset for the most part of the 1997-98 season as Jansen hit twelve goals in thirty games but a move to the Premiership with a struggling Crystal Palace side proved too good an option to turn down.

Palace where relegated in the summer of 1998 and six months later Jansen was on the move again due to the fact that the Selhurst Park club had found themselves in serious financial difficulties so Eagles boss Terry Venables reluctantly agreed to sell the forward to Blackburn Rovers for a fee in excess of £4 million.

He was relegated from the Premiership for a second time during his first few months at Ewood Park but two seasons later he hit a remarkable 23 league goals as Rovers finished runners up to Fulham in the old Division 1 in a season which also saw the Wanderers promoted.

Ten more league goals followed during the Rovers return to the top flight in 2001-02, including a stunning strike against Bolton at the Reebok Stadium in the early spring.

In February 2002 he scored the opening goal for Rovers in their 2-0 League Cup Final success over Tottenham Hotspur at the Millennium Stadium and was hopeful of gaining a place in the England squad for the World Cup in Japan.

The call up to Sven Goran Eriksson's Three Lions squad came prior to the tournament but he never made it onto the field of play in the friendlies and was therefore not selected in the final squad.

Whilst on holiday in Italy that summer the freak motorcycle accident occured and this was to leave Jansen out of the Blackburn first team reckoning for most of the 2002-2003 season and he was eventually loaned out to Coventry City in a bid to regain some much needed match fitness and confidence.

The then Rovers manager Graeme Souness remained patient with him for long periods but despite a lot of hard work and effort he was unable to reach the highs of Rovers promotion season and was no longer an automatic choice in the side due to the form of Andy Cole amongst others.

By 2004-2005 Jansen's former team mate Mark Hughes had come into the Blackburn managerial seat and was keen to give the player a chance to start a fresh but once again the player was limited in his appearances in the starting line up.

He was rewarded with a one-year contract in the summer of 2005 but his lack of opportunities in the side forced him to consider ending his stay with Rovers and in early 2006 he successfully negotiated a mutual release from the club.

Manchester City invited him for a trial at Eastlands soonafter but Jansen preferred to make the short move to the Reebok with Bolton instead.
