Bolton Wanderers reserves thought they had done enough to hold on for a point against Manchester United earlier tonight only for midfielder Tom Cleverley to strike twice in the dying moments of the game at the County Ground.

Cleverley put Bolton to the sword in the 89th and 90th minute leaving Jimmy Phillips side starting the new year with a defeat in the same manner as they had ended the old one.

Bolton-born Sam Hewson went close for United in the first half whilst German youth international Kevin Wolze went close at the other end for the Wanderers only to see his effort cut out by the Reds defender James Chester.

Home captain Robert Sissons saw his effort from distance blocked early in the second half and Chris Basham was unlucky not to capitalise for Bolton after a good lay off from Michael Burns.

Two mistakes allowed Cleverley to steal the points for United, firstly a defensive lapse allowed the youngster to snatch the three points from close range and then goalkeeper Adam Bogdan, who was on the bench for the seniors recently, made a hash of his clearance allowing United to take advantage.
