Bolton Wanderers forgotten man Heidar Helguson is on the road to recovery after spending a lengthy spell on the sidelines and the Icelander could feature for the Trotters during their New Year fixtures.

Back in mid-September the 30-year old had surgery on a troublesome ankle problem which was expected to keep him out of action for six weeks but the road to recovery has taken much longer than expected.

Now following a return to training, the former Watford and Fulham star will take part in a behind closed doors friendly to build up his fitness and other injury victims such as Joey O'Brien and Blerim Dzemaili will also feature.

"We still have to wrap Heidar in cotton wool to make sure, now he’s back, he stays with us,” said Bolton manager Gary Megson.

“Joey has had three or four days' training and, like Heidar, we can’t rush things so there are more setbacks. But we’ve arranged a private friendly for a few of them.”

Helguson has appeared in three Wanderers league matches so far, with his only goal of the campaign so far coming on his return to Fulham in August in a game which Bolton lost by two goals to one.
