Over 1,000 were packed into Manchester Cathedral on Thursday for a special ceremony organised to remember and celebrate the life of George Best. It was another emotional occasion with many ex-players reading special words as a city paid thanks to the Ulsterman. New Page 4

A congregation in excess of 1,000 paid homage to United legend George Best on Thursday. Friends, family and former team-mates were all in attendance at Manchester Cathedral to remember the Ulsterman who sadly lost his battle against ill health last November.

'Dean of Manchester' Rogers Govender led an emotional service which was also aired on a big screen at Exchange Square. Supporters gathered to bid a fond farewell to the footballing genius, with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Wilf McGuiness, former Leeds star Eddie Gray and actor James Nesbitt all delivering tributes to one of the beautiful game's most recognisable faces.

After his Belfast funeral in December, this occasion was seen as Manchester's chance to thank a national hero for his services to football which have inspired generations of fans. Rio Ferdinand, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Louis Saha were amongst the assembly as the city celebrated the life of George Best.

Rest in Peace.
