The 2-1 reverse in Benfica ended Manchester United's European entry this season in bitterly dissappointing circumstances. United, who last missed out on qualifying for the Champions League knock-out stages 11 years ago, picked up only one win from their six Champions League group games and failed to pick up the point required in Lisbon for progression to the next stage.
