Manchester United will axe their women’s football team at the end of the current season. Ladies will only be given the opportunity to play competitive football at Old Trafford only up to the age of 16.

Manchester United Football Club will cause controversy when the women’s senior XI is axed at the end of the current season.

 

The Red Devils will only offer ladies football of a competitive nature up to the age of 16. The news comes only a few weeks before North West England hosts the 2005 European Championship and is likely to dent the celebrations.

"Our aim is best served concentrating on youngsters," said club director of communications Philip Townsend.

"Our resources are better deployed at the level of school-age children rather than adults."
