Manchester United sensation Wayne Rooney has been officially crowned as "European Golden Boy", seeing off strong competition from the likes of Old Trafford team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

The award was conducted by Italian newspaper 'Tuttosport', who accepted the opinions from sports-journalists from all around Europe. Rooney ended up as the player under the age of 21 with the most votes.

United's Portugal international winger Cristiano Ronaldo finished in second spot whilst Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres and Chelsea's Arjen Robben came in 3rd and 4th position respectively.

Speaking after receiving the accolade, the England international said: "There were a lot of great players close to winning this trophy so to have come first is a great honour, although a lot of credit must go to my team-mates"

"Without their support I would not have been in a position to win."

"I see Cristiano Ronaldo every day on the training ground and it is only when you play and train with players every day that you can truly appreciate how good they are." he added.
