The eccentric Frenchman has been dropped to 3rd choice 'keeper after the signing of American Tim Howard. Northern Irishman Roy Carroll has been handed the position of 'back-up keeper' to Howard in favor of Barthez.

"We're still on the Barthez track, but we have not yet started serious negotiations." said Marseille boss Allien Perrin.

"We would be heading for a loan more than for a proper transfer. There are intermediate solutions, like a loan with a transfer option." he added.

This move would benefit both United and Barthez. Barthez's international future is in doubt after he is not getting enough first-team games and United wouldn't have to pay his wages.

"You will see whether he is still our keeper against Germany. Either Fabien regains his place with Man United or he may move to another club." said France manager Jacques Santini." 

If this deal is sealed up, Barthez wouldn't be the only 'keeper out on loan. Spaniard Ricardo joined Spanish out-fit Racing on a year's long loan deal.
