More semi-final heartache as European dream and season end

Bitter blow for Reds

Manchester United have seen their Cup hopes dashed at the semi-final stage for the third time this season, after a 2-1 loss at the hands of Sevilla in the Europa League in Cologne.

The game got off to a great start for United as a Bruno Fernandes trademark penalty put Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side ahead. Diego Carlos had fouled Marcus Rashford, and Fernandes - who brought back the fantastic jump before striking the ball - then dispatched the spot-kick emphatically from 12 yards.

However, former Liverpool man Suso restored parity on 26 minutes as David de Gea was beaten at his far post.

United were frustrated by a host of missed opportunities despite controlling the game for long periods. For Sevilla, Luuk de Jong ultimately settled the contest as he flicked home a Jesus Navas cross as the game entered its final stages.

The Red Devils registered a whopping 20 shots to Sevilla's nine, and will rue a series of missed chances and another inspired performance from an opposition goalkeeper, with Yassine Bounou on fine form.

It means a good campaign ends without silverware - United qualifying for the Champions League with a third-placed finish, but seeing their Cup dreams scuppered at the last four stage in the FA Cup, League Cup and continental competition.

The prolonged 2019/20 Europa League run has brought many good memories but ultimately ends in disappointment, as United's season finally comes to an end with only a second defeat in 25 matches. Full Time - Sevilla 2-1 Manchester United
