The video assistant referee again worked in Manchester United's favour as Everton had a last-gasp winner ruled out at Goodison Park, to extend the Red Devils' unbeaten run to eight matches.

David de Gea stepped back into goalkeepeing duties after Sergio Romero took on responsibility in the mid-week Europa League clash against Brugge - but Solskjaer may have been wishing he kept faith with United's Argentinean stopper, after a horror start in Walton.

The Spaniard's woeful clearance hit Dominic Calvert-Lewin and made its way into the back of the United net, with only three minutes on the clock.

Solskjaer's charges responded positively - with Nemanja Matic hitting the crossbar, before Bruno Fernandes continued his rich vein of form with a long-range finish that England stopper Jordan Pickford should probably have saved.

United were better before the break, but Everton kicked on after the interval as they looked to promote their own European qualification ambitions. Calvert-Lewin thought he had settled the contest late in stoppage time - but VAR had other ideas, with a team-mate in an offside position.

A bad-tempered game with seven bookings sees United survive a late scareand extend an impressive unbeaten run to eight games. With Man City, Spurs and crucial Cup games in the days and weeks which follow, this is a pivotal period of a roller-coaster season.

Full Time - Everton 1-1 Manchester United
