Red Devils back top with battling Stoke draw

Manchester United returned to the top of the Premier League - but had to settle for a point in a 2-2 draw at Stoke City.

The Red Devils' 100% start to the new league campaign came to an end on Stanley Matthews Way, as the Potters and United shared the spoils.

Former United frontman Sparky Hughes saw his charges take the lead, as summer acquisition Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting drove home a fine passing move. The opener saw David de Gea beaten for the first time in the league this season.

United, however, restored parity before the interval. Paul Pogba's header did the business - via the back of Marcus Rashford's head, with the England frontman knowing little of the timely equaliser.

The game's next goal - from Romelu Lukaku - was far more decisive. He bagged his fifth goal for the club, beating the offside trap before dispatching a lofty finish.

Lukaku's goal followed an excellent week on international duty with Belgium, hitting a hat-trick against Gibraltar in a 9-0 win, before a crucial strike against Greece. However, he would rue a late miss on Saturday evening.

Choupo-Moting nodded home from Xherdan Shaqiri, but neither side could find a winner. Lukaku fired over an Antonio Valencia cross he probably should have done better with, before Jack Butland produced a save-of-the-month contender at the death as the Reds pressed.

United return to the top of the table, with their goal difference still better than level-pegging Manchester City, despite the Citizens smashing Liverpool by five goals to nil earlier on Saturday. Attentions now turn to a hotly-anticipated return to the Champions League, as familiar foes in FC Basel visit Old Trafford.

Full Time - Stoke City 2-2 Manchester United
Attendance - 29,320
