Lukaku fires brace as stunning United smash the Hammers

Two goals

Manchester United started the new Premier League season with a hugely entertaining, slick and dominant display, hammering West Ham United by four goals to nil at Old Trafford.

Romelu Lukaku scored twice on a stunning league debut for the club, as United brushed aside the Irons, and filled Old Trafford with a sense of early season optimism.

Lukaku’s brace followed his strike against Real Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup, giving him an impressive three goals from two starts.

The £75million man latched onto a Marcus Rashford pass to break the deadlock with a rasping finish, before nodding home a Henrikh Mkhitaryan after half-time.

Old Trafford was breathless at times as United’s pacey, attacking-style brought back memories of trophy-laden years under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Summer acquisition Nemanja Matic showed purpose and ambition throughout from the middle of the park, proving the beating pulse of Jose Mourinho's XI and driving United forward time after time.

Anthony Martial beat Joe Hart late on, as United's late rally gave the scoreline an emphatic nature. Paul Pogba, too, needs a big season - and a curling last-gasp finish was no less than a strong performance deserved, as the hosts scored twice late on.

The season is young – but early concerns following a disappointing Super Cup display were rapidly extinguished, on Sunday. United’s awe-inspiring display, indeed, has evoked chatter that Mourinho's men look equipped to challenge for a first Premier League crown since 2013.

Full Time – Manchester United 4-0 West Ham United
Attendance - 74,928
