United outplayed by Real in Uefa Super Cup defeat

Manchester United lost a Uefa Super Cup final for the third time, as debutant Romelu Lukaku scored, and missed a sitter, in disappointingly a one-sided 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid.

A Spanish club has won the competition for the eighth year in nine, as United were beaten by Real in Skopje.

Wednesday's scoreline was close, but United were second best for long periods, as Los Blancos' quick, slick passing continued to cut open Jose Mourinho's side.

The deadlock was broken on 24 minutes as Casemiro fired a neat half volley beyond the reach of David de Gea, though United were unfortunate that the offside flag was not raised.

Isco turned home to double a neat attacking move on 52 minutes, in a game which - on another day - Real could have won by four or more goals.

Gareth Bale also turned an effort against the crossbar for the Champions League holders, with the Welshman's inclusion enough for United boss Mourinho to rule out an audacious summer swoop for the record-breaking star.

Lukaku tapped in on 62 minutes, following some decent work from substitute Marouane Fellaini, but an equaliser would have been hugely fortunate. United looked a yard or so off Real's blistering sharpness, just days before the new Premier League campaign gets underway.

United's new £75million frontman will have been relieved to grab a debut goal, after a horror miss earlier in the game from close range. A late, strange foul throw summed up a mixed evening for the Belgian forward, while fellow big money player Paul Pogba had an indifferent evening in midfield.

Marcus Rashford also missed a good chance for United - as the full-time whistle was met by celebrations from Zinedine Zidane's dominant, trophy-laden charges.

Sadly, nobody can doubt that Real fully deserved to win the Super Cup for the fourth time, all of which have come since 2002. United miss out on a seventh major European honour, with Real Madrid joining Zenit and Lazio as clubs to have got the better of the Red Devils in this competition.
