Fellaini nightmare as Everton grab a late point

Marouane Fellaini had a disastrous return to Goodison Park on Sunday, giving away a critical penalty only minutes after coming on as a substitute, in a 1-1 draw against Everton.

The former Toffee was introduced on 85 minutes to help United see out a narrow one-goal lead, but felled Idrissa Gueye in the penalty box, before Leighton Baines kept his cool from the spot to restore parity.

A stunning first-half finish from Zlatan Ibrahimovic had given United the lead, taking advantage of some poor decision-making from the on-rushing home stopper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Given United's stuttering league form, there was an air of inevitability about Everton's late equaliser. The hosts ended the game increasingly strongly, despite struggling for creativity in the opening period.

Jose Mourinho's men have drawn six of their last eight Premier League encounters, and have claimed only two top-flight wins in 11 attempts.

Whilst United will rue the late equaliser, Everton fans will point to defender Marcos Rojo being lucky to still be on the pitch after a reckless, two-footed early challenge on Gueye, with the score still deadlocked at 0-0.

Attentions now turn to the Europa League, where United need a point at Zorya Luhansk to guarantee progression to the knock-out stages of a competition the club has never previously won.
