Rooney wants away

In an unbelievable statement, Wayne Rooney has confirmed why he wants to quit Manchester United. The 24-year-old has accused the club of lacking ambition and has said he has not been given the "assurances" he wants about the club's future playing squad.

Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed earlier this week that Rooney had told him in August that he did not wish to sign a new contract and wanted to quit United.

The England frontman added: "It is absolutely true, as [Ferguson] said, that my agent and I have had a number of meetings with the club about a new contract".

"During those meetings in August I asked for assurances about the continued ability of the club to attract the top players in the world."

"I met with David Gill last week and he did not give me any of the assurances I was seeking about the future squad.

"I then told him that I would not be signing a new contract".

Perhaps the former Everton man needs reminding that, since he joined United, the club have won a host of major honours and have competed in two European Cup finals.

Rooney boasts one of the most enviable medal collections in world football and has played alongside some of the finest footballers on the planet whilst donning the red jersey.
