Sources at Sky Sports suggest that Michael Owen will wear the number seven jersey for Manchester United next season. Cristiano Ronaldo held the jersey from 2003 to 2009 before joining Real Madrid in a record-breaking £80million move.

Few United fans need reminding of the special significance the number seven jerseys holds at the club.

A host of the club's most famous and iconic players have worn the jersey - including David Beckham, George Best and Bryan Robson.

According to Sky Sports, controversial summer signing Owen will be the latest player to take the number following his free transfer move from Newcastle.

Owen's Liverpool connections made his move to Old Trafford a contentious one - with the England frontman's switch to United one of the most headline-grabbing moves of the summer.
