Pele handed out the award

Cristiano Ronaldo was handed the FIFA World Player of the Year crown on Monday evening. The Manchester United winger beat-off competition from AC Milan's Kaka, Liverpool's Fernando Torres and Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Xavi become the first Premier League player to land the prestigious accolade.

Ronaldo played a central role in United's success throughout 2008 - helping the club to Premier League, European Cup and Club World Trophy success with a series of glittering displays.

He netted a jaw-dropping 42 goals last season, but his reputation amongst the Old Trafford faithful was hugely sour following a summer of speculation in which the 23-year-old publicly stated his desire to join Real Madrid.

The player, however, has said all the right things this season and paid tribute to his team-mates and Sir Alex Ferguson when collecting the trophy.

"It's an overwhelming moment in my career and I'd like to dedicate this award to my family, friends and colleagues," said the winger.

"It's also true that the manager always has an important role to play. It was a great season for me and for my club, and the coach was important for me because I learned a lot for him.

"His experience over so many years is of paramount importance - it's a privilege to have such a great club manager."

The award was voted for by 155 national team managers and captains. Ronaldo can add the gong to his coveted Ballon d'Or prize, and the FifPro World Footballer of the Year title he won in October.
