Goalless draw

Manchester United claimed a credible point at Villa Park on Saturday evening, though Sir Alex Ferguson will regard it as an opportunity missed after Liverpool and Chelsea failed to win and Arsenal were thrashed at Eastlands. The result keeps United third in the table as attentions turn to European action and Tuesday’s trip to Villarreal.

This was a crucial game for both teams -  United looking to prove their title credentials against an in-form side who recently won 2-0 at Arsenal, with the Villains keen to underline their intentions of a top four finish this season.

It was a lively affair but both sides failed to create enough clear-cut chances. United were the better side for long periods, though Villa looked at their most dangerous after half-time as they put some decent moves together.

The result leaves United third in the table - eight points behind the leaders. Villa are one place and one point behind the Champions - though Fergie's men still hold a crucial game-in-hand on the club's around them.
