Bells Challenge Cup 2nd Round

Hamilton Accies V Airdrie Sep 2nd Firhill Park

The second round took us to Firhill to face an on form Accies side who were at the time threatning to run away with the third division.

Once again a good turnout was present from the Airdrie faithful and they got behind the team from the first whistle. There was a lot of talk too about a new striker brought in by Steve Archibald who was to make a dream debut in the diamond shirt, Matias Pacifico was about to become an instant Airdrie hero.

The Match Report

Hamilton 0 Airdrie 1 (aet)

Diamonds new boy, Mattias Pacifico snatched an extra-time winner to take Airdrie into the third round of the Bell's Challenge Cup.

An Austin McCann cross was met at the far post for the 6'3" Argentinean striker to power a header past the helpless Accie's keeper, McFarlane.

The first half was pretty much uneventful with a lack of invention shown from both teams in the last third of the park.

Up until McCann delivered the killer ball he was the bad boy of the team when he was brought down in the box and proceeded to hit a weak shot at McFarlane's right hand side from the resulting penalty which the keeper saved well.

The Accies had their chances in the second period, the best one of note was when Allan Russell watched his header from a Michael Moore cross fly narrowly wide.

Calderon and Moreau began to take more control in midfield when Garcia Sanjuan pushed into the midfield with them, that left both of the flair players to put their foot on the ball and from there on in their was only going to be one team that would win the game.

Airdrie Team : Broto, Boyce, McCann, Alfonso, Forrest, Sanjuan, Moreau, Brady, Calderon, Fernandez, Elliot. Subs : Taylor, Prest, Pacifico, Wilson and Clarke.
