St Ambrose were crowned United Schools Champions on Sunday 16th of May after defeating  Chryston on penalties in a thrilling match at New Broomfied.

 The Day

 

 

 

One of our biggest fears was always going to be the weather, but it turned out to be an absolutely beautiful day to bring back a Schools Football competition to Airdrie.

For the Trust the day began early, to early for some of us who were still under the weather from the previous nights parties. So 11am start saw Veronica handing out instructions for each of the volunteers, every thing from who would be selling match programmes to Bob Reid organising the lay out of the small fun fair we had organised.

Every thing seemed to move along nicely all we needed was for some interested participants to come along and enjoy the day. We ended up with just over 300 there on the day so it was a start.

There are so many people that made this day a success but a special mention should go to our three main sponsors The Airdrie round Circle for supplying the medals and Trophy. The K.O.S.B. for enthusiasm a piper to bring the players on to the park and so many other things and not least Strathclyde Police for much needed sponsorship money and arranging for Clan FM to come along with there mobile unit.

All in all a good day with a lot of pressure and seeing it all come together made it a worth while exercise.

 Full Report

A fitting finale to this years competition saw Craig Marshall open the scoring on 18 minutes for Chryston High. The play had been end to end but it was Chryston who used there strength to get ahead. A minute later the score was 2-0 Chryston as John Andrew Willis scored.

It was harsh on St Ambrose who up until now had been giving as good as they got and had created some good chances in the opening period.

St Ambrose came out of the changing rooms at half time even more fired up and Mark Breen brought the game back to 2-1 after 12 minutes of the restart, it was super sub Shaun O'Leary who bagged the equaliser with 13 minutes to go and take the first final in to penalties.

St Ambrose kept there nerve in the shoot out scoring all four of theirs, but it was goal keeper Adam Craig  ho was the hero saving two of Chryston four shots.

The win was extra special for St Ambrose winger Keiran Colgan whose grandfather played and won he competition playing for All Saints school back in 1927.

Airdrie United Captain Marvyn Wilson who had played for Clarkston in the competition and also coached the school to glory in the 90's handed over the trophy and medals after the match.

Winning coach Bobby Winslow said "It is very satisfying to have won such a prestigious event. The players are small in stature and I am delighted with the hard work and effort put in."
