Kelvinbank Star 1-1 AS Airdrie

 

Airdrie were able to field an unchanged side from last week’s west cup win over Tarbolton as they looked to convert the cup form in to league points.

 

After a dull ten minutes Airdrie sprung into life as they pinned there opponents back deep into there own half. Firstly Adams played a super ball into the area for Gray but the keeper was bright enough to make the save from his effort. A minute later the keeper came to the home side’s rescue again as Adams closed down the defender and robbed him of the ball, the keeper just getting a hand to Adams shot wide. Ross Graham fired over the corner and Scott Lindsay was unmarked at the back post to head Airdrie into the lead. Airdrie dominated the rest of the half and created several chances, Shaw’s winding run was brought to a halt just outside the box and Lindsay fired the free kick just wide. Ross Graham cleared a ball out of defence and Gray was first onto it to race clear but the keeper again denied Airdrie with a good save. Gray found himself in a similar position soon after and this time went round the keeper but his touch was too heavy and took him wide of goal and defenders got back to block the cross. Just before the break Airdrie were denied a certain penalty as Smith was barged over as he brought the ball under control just six yards out.

A few minutes after the re start Shaw saw an effort just past the post after good set up play from Slevin and Adams. The goal keeper saved another Shaw chance on 55 minutes as the away side looked to get the 2^nd goal that would have killed the game off. Lindsay attempted to repeat his strike from last week as he got the overhead kick in again but was just off target on this occasion. Neil Pardoe was next to pass up a good chance after Gray and Adams had set him up he put the ball over the bar. Airdrie were made to pay for all those missed chances when a rare kelvinbank attack saw the ball break at the back post and the sub was able to poke the ball under Rowan for an unlikely equalizer, even after that bitter blow Airdrie had ten minutes to rescue the situation and they created five glorious chances to take the points. Gray took on the back line and squared the ball for Hetherington would have scored with a first time shot but he took a touch which allowed the defence to block out the effort. Lindsay set up the next effort as he hit the ball across the 6 yard line for Shaw coming in at the back post but he blazed the ball high over the bar. Next up Ross Graham hit a 20 yard effort off the bar as time was running out. Slevin had a great chance to win it as he rose unmarked in the 6 yard box but headed straight into the keepers hands. Airdrie’s last chance saw Lindsay drive into the box and there were no takers as flashed the ball across goal.

A case of two points dropped and being punished for not taking the chances, to be fair we created several of them which is pleasing and the players are getting themselves into goal scoring situations, On another day we could have been four or five up by the break but we’ll have to take it on the chin. No league action this week as the uneven numbers take there toll so we will be seeking a friendly match for this coming Saturday to keep everyone ticking over.

MOM: anyone of four or five could have got the award but Andy Slevin picks it up for completely snuffing out Kelvinbank’s attack.
