Sean Scannell

In a recent interview, Republic Of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli hailed the future of the young Crystal Palace starlet. At the tender age of 18, Scannell has a long career ahead, and if he continues his development as he has been doing, he could well be a player worth keeping tabs on. Tardelli optimistically is already tipping him to be the Irish Theo Walcott.

Tardelli stated "Sean is exciting. He is a big talent and would remind you of Walcott in terms of his pace and movement. Of course he has a lot to do still, but he is very switched on and has a real desire and hunger. When I look at young players, it is important to see their willingness to learn. Sean has that."

Scannell is playing for Championship side Palace, and is surrounded by former Premier League players who rushed their progress and suffered as a result. With the likes of Wayne Routledge, Julian Gray and John Bostock, who all moved to larger clubs maybe too quickly, in the side, Scannell has plenty of experience surrounding him in the development area that should serve him well.

Scannell stated "Well that won't happen to me. I want to stay at Palace for as long as possible because i'm getting experience here, aren't I?. As a footballer, first and foremost you want to play. So whats the point in me going to a bigger club and getting stuck in the reserves? The key for me is to keep my head down, learn my trade and keep my feet on the ground. Hopefully someday I will move, but whats the rush?"

Wise words from the 18 year old indeed. A mature attitude of this nature can only whet the supporters appetite's to watch his development on a slow,steady basis in the hopes he will bloom into a fully fledged member of our International senior team. Even at such a young age, he has made over 50 appearances for the Crystal Palace first team and numerous appearances for the Irish Under-21 team.

The final words on this I will leave to Scannell, illustrating the wise head on the young shoulders.

""Like most young footballers, I've still to see the bigger picture. Fact is, you don't know the game straight off, do you? But i'm happy with what i've done. Like, its only 18 months ago since I was going to school three days a week and then training the other couple of days with Palace."

He looked very lively when I saw him playing for Ireland B v Forest last October. Certainly one for the future.
