Olympiacos must stop RVP and Rooney, says club director

Olympiacos v. MUFC

Ahead of Tuesday evening's Champions League clash in Athens, Olympiacos club director Pierre Issa has said his side must stop Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie, whom he has labelled the best strikers in Europe.

Olympiacos presently sit top of the Greek Super League - and have conceded only nine goals from 26 league outings to date.

Issa hopes his team's defensive strength will prove an asset in their two-legged Champions League tie with United, but has acknowledged the battle they face in keeping quiet RVP and Rooney.

Both players were on target as United won 2-0 at Crystal Palace on Saturday and, following news of Rooney's new contract, United's strike force travel to Athens in a buoyant mood.

"We cannot let Van Persie and Rooney play," Issa said.

"We must be at our best. We have excellent defence in our team, and of course it will be a challenge for them to stop United's strikers, who are the best in Europe. The team will be very proud if they can stop Rooney and Van Persie scoring. It's a challenge to stop them. We will have to work hard."
