Ex-United striker Healy hangs up his boots

Former Manchester United frontman David Healy has hung up his boots at the age of 34.

The Ulsterman kicked off his career at Old Trafford, but made only three first-team appearances for the Red Devils, all of which came as a substitute.

His United debut came in a 3-0 League Cup defeat at Aston Villa, whilst his sole Premier League appearance under Sir Alex Ferguson came against Ipswich Town.

Spells at Preston North End and Leeds United were his most successful in club football, but his form for Northern Ireland must surely go down as the highest of his professional career.

Healy amassed 95 caps for his country and scored 36 goals, including a winning goal against England in 2005 and a sensational hat-trick against Spain the following year.

Following a disappointing spell with Bury, Healy has opted to hang up his boots after an unsuccessful search for a new club.
