AS Airdrie 2-3 Tynecastle

A tough opening fixture for Airdrie with a visit from Tynecastle, Monklands poor state of pitches led us to welcoming the Champions to The Jock Stein pitches, Hamilton! Smith, Capaldi, Clark, Leishman & Burton were all missing from last weeks win, Along with injuries to Brown & Hetherington this left Airdrie a little light on options. Lindsay, Slevin, Gray, N.Pardoe & R.Graham all returned to the starting line up, However during warm up Slevin’s ankle was giving him some trouble and was withdrawn before kick off, Scott Graham taking his place. This left Airdrie

With just Brady on the bench, himself still carrying a toe injury. Tynecastle started well and were causing some problems for Airdrie. They took the lead after a fine run from midfield ended with a low drive across Rowan in to the bottom corner. Airdrie got an equalizer after a long throw wasn’t properly cleared and the ball fell for Lindsay to hook over his shoulder and beyond the keeper’s reach. This was short lived however as Tynecastle were awarded a penalty. The ball kicked up inside the area and struck Scott on the arm, more a case of ball to hand than handball but I’ve seen them given before, Rowan got a hand to the kick but not enough to make the stop. A few words at half time saw Airdrie come out much more organized and determined and started asking some questions of Tynecastle, despite the efforts they couldn’t find a way to goal. With twenty minutes left Tynecastle scored a third Airdrie failed to clear and Taylor picked up the ball before skipping past a tackle and putting the ball across Rowan and finding the back of the net. Soon after Tynecastle were reduced to ten men as Lindsay was caught late a small melee broke out Lindsay was booked and the Tynecastle player saw red. This allowed Airdrie to throw caution to the wind and Stuck Brady on up front for the last ten in place of full back Scott. It almost paid off as Brady found space in the box and his glancing header just didn’t have enough angle on it to beat the keeper. With five to go Cooper was thrown up front to add some height to the inevitable long ball attacks and Airdrie were rewarded as Cooper challenged for a long ball and the defender could only head past his own keeper. Time ran down on Airdrie and any chance of taking something from the game was gone. A tough start to what should be a long hard season and we must pick ourselves up for a visit to Shawbridge next week. Man of the Match – Scott Lindsay TeamRowanScott Cooper S.Graham N.PardoeShaw Edgar Lindsay R.GrahamGray K.Pardoe
