The Football Association has rejected an appeal by Nottingham Forest to overturn a controversial red card handed to defender Kelvin Wilson during Saturday’s clash with Huddersfield. Manager Colin Calderwood had been hoping to have the defender available for next Saturday’s clash with Leyton Orient.

Referee Andrew Taylor shocked fans by awarding a penalty and dismissing Wilson in the first half of the match.

Wilson had headed the ball back to goalkeeper Paul Smith, before he and chasing Huddersfield player Malvin Kamara fell down at the edge of the penalty area.

The decision was widely contested and dubbed “bizarre” by sections of the wider media.

However, the appeals panel has rejected Forest’s claim and Wilson’s suspension stands.

 
Ten-man Forest were resurgent in the second half and recovered to land a late, and memorable, 2-1 victory.
