Walter Smith Appointed as New Assistant Boss
Sir Alex Ferguson has raised a few eyebrows by appointing former Glasgow Rangers and Everton boss and fellow Scotsman Walter Smith as his new assistant manager until the end of the season.

A number of names have been linked to the post and numerous people from home and abroad have been rumoured to be in talks with the club about taking the post, but the appointment of Walter Smith is certainly a surprise.

United have been without a permanent assistant since Carlos Queiroz left the club to take the managers job at Real Madrid during the pre-season, and many supporters feel that the club has lacked something without a right-hand man for Sir Alex Ferguson.

Smith is clearly delighted at coming to Old Trafford, and is looking forward to a new challenge in football after being out of managerial work since he left Everton in 2002.

"The chance to come to Manchester United is something I couldn't turn down," said Smith.

"There are few bigger challenges in football than helping a successful side sustain their achievements."

"I have huge admiration for what Sir Alex has achieved at United and I'm excited to be part of it."

Sir Alex Ferguson, who previously revealed he wanted Wales boss Mark Hughes to join him on the Red Devils bench, is also delighted at the news and believes Smith's experience in the game will help him be a success at United.

"I am delighted that Walter has accepted the chance to join United," said boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

"There are few people in the game with his experience, knowledge and technical ability."

On the announcement of the news, Manchester United released the following statement in regard to Smith's arrival.

"Walter Smith, one of the most decorated managers in Scottish football history has joined Manchester United until the end of the current season as assistant to the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson." read the statement

"His appointment fills a vacancy that has existed since Carlos Queiroz left the club last summer."

The club will look at the situation of an assistant at the end of the season, and Smith will most probably be hoping for an extension to his contract as second in command at United. Welcome to Old Trafford Walter.
