New job for Rooney

Former Manchester United frontman Wayne Rooney has been named as the new manager of Birmingham City, in what is his third role in football management.

Rooney, 37, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal in the Midlands, only days after being relieved of his duties with Major League Soccer outfit DC United. 

Wazza had previously managed Derby County - where he took charge of 85 games, winning 24, drawing 22 and losing 39.

After leaving Pride Park in June 2022, he headed Stateside - winning 14, drawing 14 and losing 25 of his 53 games in charge of the Washington club.

He replaces John Eustance in the St Andrews hotseat - with Birmingham currently sitting sixth in the league table as they bid for a return to the Premier League. 

Despite a strong start to the season, Birmingham sacked Eustace with an explosive statement questioning whether the Board of Directors and football management were "fully aligned on the importance of implementing a winning mentality and a culture of ambition across the entire Football Club".

Rooney spent 13 seasons with Manchester United, bagging an incredible 253 goals from 559 appearances. He is the Red Devils' record goalscorer, while he made more appearances for England than any other outfield player.
