Robin van Persie was on target from the penalty spot as the Netherlands left it late to avoid a humiliating result against Kazakhstan on Friday evening.

Daley Blind was also in action for the Dutch, who will be relieved to have come from behind in a 3-1 win in this Euro 2016 qualifier.

Guus Hiddink's men trailed at the break after Renat Abdulin handed the visitors a shock lead on 17 minutes.

Ranked 127th in the world, Kazakhstan were seeking a major upset, but they were pegged back after the hour mark as Klaas-Jan Huntelaar restored parity.

Yuri Krasnozhan's underdogs went down to ten men, with Baurzhan Dzholchiev dismissed, but the Dutch had to wait until the 82nd minute to take the lead as Ibrahim Afellay found the target.

United frontman RVP sealed the win in the closing moments for the World Cup semi-finalists, converting from the penalty spot as relief descended on the Amsterdam Arena.
