Oliver Norwood, on loan at Scunthorpe from United, made his Iron debut against Premier League opposition on Thursday evening. The midfielder played all 120 minutes as Newcastle United needed extra-time to secure safe passage into the competition's third round at Glanford Park.

Norwood produced a promising display in midfield as Scunthorpe United came within ten minutes of dumping Newcastle out of the Carling-sponsored competition.

Chris Dagnell had broken the deadlock on 15 minutes in front of 4,408 spectators in North Lincolnshire.

But Newcastle restored parity on 80 minutes through Ryan Taylor, before substitute Sammy Ameobi settled proceedings when the tie looked destined for penalties.

Norwood will be hoping to keep his place in the Scunthorpe line-up for the weekend's league clash with Sheffield Wednesday and the Johnstone Paint Trophy clash against Hartlepool the following Tuesday.

This was the player's first competitive match since Northern Ireland's 2-0 defeat to Wales in May.
