Crewe boss Dario Gradi speaks of the importance of keeping players calm

Dario Gradi has backed former player Danny Murphy's attack on over aggresive tackling in the modern game.

Last week Fulham captain Murphy, 33, launched an astonishing attack on Stoke City's Tony Pullis for over pumping up his side. During Murphy's outburst he gave mention to Gradi and former Fulham boss Roy Hodgson in how how the pair go about things the right way.

Backing his former academy graduate Gradi told BBC Stoke: "Danny mentioned Roy Hodgson and myself last week and that we didn't wind players up. I don't think you don't play good football if you're hot headed."

Gradi also stated that he would prefer to keep players injury free than see them make over aggressive challenges, risking injury: "I'm happy to see people make tackles. I'm just not happy for people to risk injury getting tackled."

"Nicky Maynard used to go into those sliding tackles and ended up breaking his own leg. I remember Bob Scott used to go into hair-raising tackles on the halfway line. I used to say to him, 'you've won the ball, given a throw-in away. Was it really worth risking your limbs for that?"
