The Crunch Game

By Wolves
July 26 2020

So... the final game of the 2019-20 Premier League season, and Wolves travel to Stamford Bridge for a game which has much riding on the result for both teams.

Wolves probably wouldn't have chosen this game as the final fixture of the season, but go into it knowing that a win will definitely see them establish their highest ever finish in the PL and another season in the Europa League. On the other hand Chelsea require a point to ensure Champions League football next season. Wolves will be hoping to see their team fare better than the 5-2 drubbing they suffered from Chelsea at Molineux many moons ago at the beginning of the season. Last season at Stamford Bridge Wolves led for the majority of the game before an Eden Hazard solo goal levelled the score.

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo has declared a fully fit squad so the likely debate is whether he will play a five man midfield with Leander Dendoncker included, or play three up front again.

Sky Sports have stepped up to the plate today by showing all the remaining games across their network, and our game will feature on Sky Sports 3 - Sky Football, kicking off - as will all matches - at 4pm.

Our game will be officiated by Stuart Atwell

This board will carry a limited commentary and members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those unable to watch the game.

A few changes to the starting line-up for today's game. Joao Moutinho, Adama Traore and Daniel Podence all start on the bench and we start with a three man attack. And many congratulations to Matt Doherty playing his 300th game for Wolves today. Line-up:

Lots of permutations today - can we win (of course we can, will we?), how will Palace / Spurs shape up (form screams a Spurs win), will the Villa survive?

Interesting Nuno has gone for Jota and Neto from the off, I really hope Diogo has a good match (better decision making overall, fingers crossed) or just smashes one in like we know he can. Also going for Donk, we are clearly looking to support the front men more ........ we have to.

When will Traore and Dear Podence get on?

Enjoy the match all, I know need to work out precisely which channel on Sky is showing us

Afternoon Ivy
I’m hoping 7 consecutive defeats will be enough to worry Woy’s boys into a win against Spurs. I think it would be fabulous for us to finish above Spurs and Arsenal!!

Our game is on Sky Sports 3

Jimenez and Jota not really got their passing boots on today as yet.

Donk playing well.

Jimenez on the ground after aN accidental head clash, that ay good. He’s getting the concussion check, looks okay bar the extremely raised / bruised right cheek.

Zouma cheats and tries to get Jimenez sent off, disgusting, he should be booked for that pathetic cod injury. Commentators seem to think Raul should have been off, not that they are biased.

2nd goal was pretty poor defending to be honest, Saiss drawn towards the ball, I thought Coady had got it, but good centre forward play from Giroud - the swine.

What a double blow at the end. I’m sure the first goal unhinged us for those last minutes. A truly dreadful Atwell decision, and it was a terrific finish. Being picky, Neves should have cleared just before the free kick when he had the chance.

A good one to win, as they say - but so, so disappointing.

We really need our front line to hold the ball up much better and keep possession, we just haven’t done that, either Raul or Jota and Neto hasn’t had much of the play. Up until the goals I thought Donk and Neves had been playing well.

One things for sure, we can’t keep relying on second half performances / revivals etc

After a good first 45 minutes we succumbed to two good goals although the first was shameful acting by Alonso, where is var when you need it?
Second goal was a good finish although I did think our defenders were unusually stretched and didn’t close down as well as they usually do.
All to play for and we know that our boys never give up.

Lovely approach play from Jota but a shot straight at the keeper. That’s our first piece of Wolves excitement this half aster 57 minutes.

Nuno rings the changes. Doc, Neves and Jonny off, Podence, Vinagre and Moutinho on. I suspect Nuno is not very happy with this so far in the 2nd

All over Chelsea win 2 - 0 and we never looked like denting their lead. A disappointing finish to our season when a draw would have sufficed. Only the second team to do a double over us this season. Another remarkable season for us all things considered.
OK on to the Europa League

Well considering what a very long season we've had, 7th is fine. Chelsea wins the cup and away we go. Just popped on to say enjoy the rest of the summer as best you can and let's hope to stay healthy.

Best wishes to you all!

The initiative handed to Chelsea by some poor referee decisions.
Didn’t really face up to Chelsea for the second half but I would have taken a 7th place if it had been offered at the beginning of the season.
Nice to see Jordao get his cameo appearance.
Down to our performance in the Euro now ——- what a long wonderful season.
Take care everyone.

Sadly never looked like scoring. Apart from the two goals neither did Chelsea. Great free-kick from Mount. Too many of our lads had an off day. Coady should have done better for the second goal. Neves, Raul, Jota, Neto not at their best. Best player probably Dendoncker.
Fingers crossed Chelsea win the Cup but if they do, with the Europa still to go, the new season starting on 12th Sept and qualifying matches it will be quite a hectic schedule.
For now though, let's smash the Europa League. UTW.

What a flat and thoroughly disappointing second half to end the season. Beaten, alas, by the better side but it turned on the critical and disgraceful Twattwell sh!te decision.

However ........ we have improved on last year and it has been a thoroughly enjoyable and at times bloody excellent season. We certainly have kept up with our first brilliant season in the top division and I’m sure Nuno and the management side will be looking for improvement for 2020/21.

It’s still not over yet either, Olympiakos a week Thursday which we go into with an away goal ...... so keeping everything crossed.

In the meantime, I will be a (very) temporary Chelsea fan next weekend to beat the @#$%&.

To be mixing it with the likes of Chelsea and Spurs etc, and for football fans to be speaking so very highly of us is one hell of an achievement in itself. When we look at the money spent on players who will be joining Chelsea, never mind what they've got now, and consider that our most expensive player cost us £30 million, then I think it's exceptional that our team has given so many of the top teams a real challenge this season on top of our progress - so far - in the Europa League.

I hope Chelsea do beat Arsenal and we do get another crack at Europe as I think it will help us retain our better players. However if we really do want to be in the big time, then our rich owners are going to have to dig deep and find another Bruno Fernandez from somewhere, considering the difference he has made to Man Utd's season.

essington wolf
26/07/2020 20:16
I'm not saying we would of got anything out of the game today as we were poor but ref atwell has changed the course of the game with yet another poor decision. How this clown gets a gig in the premier God only knows, although you could say that about many refs in this league. Perhaps it's time to give the ladies a chance like in the budesliga in Germany because the men ain't up to it! We have certainly had our fair share of poor decisions again this season and it's cost us. Anyway moan over it's still been a great season and it's not over yet still a lot to play for in Europe and hopefully Chelsea will win the cup final.
