Molineux Finale

By Wolves
July 20 2020

The final home game of the season sees Wolves welcome Crystal Palace to Molineux for a game which fans will know is a must win for the home team if they wish to achieve Europa League status for next season.

Wolves were pushed down into seventh place in the Premier League by Spurs after their impressive 3-0 victory over Leicester yesterday, however three points from this evening's game would restore the status quo, and take everything to next Sunday's final games of the season. So a repeat of last week's comprehensive defeat of Everton would be great result for Wolves, especially after the disappointment of being robbed of two points by poor refereeing and VAR decisions at Burnley midweek.

Daniel Podence has made a very positive impact on the team in the last two matches and it's reasonable to expect that he will also start tonight's game - in fact Nuno may well to continue with the Burnley starting eleven which was a very solid attacking line-up. Palace will be without the suspended Benteke and injured full back Van Aarnholt. It remains to be seen whether former Wolves keeper Wayne Hennessey will make an appearance.

Tonight's game will be officiated by one of the 'newbie' PL referees Peter Bankes who was particularly poor when taking charge of the home game with Newcastle.

The game will be screened on BT Sports 1 and will kick off at 20:15 Hrs

It is hoped that regular updates will be made on this site and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to follow the game

Three changes for tonight's starting Xl - Dendonker replaces Saiss, Jonny and Doc return in place of Vinagre and Neto. Line-up:

Donk back in defence, our modern day utility man. Certainly plenty on the bench. hopefully Dear Podence will have another influential match at Molineux. When at their best I like the Doc link up on the right.

Given that Sheff Utd are losing, I believe a point tonight is enough for 7th place guaranteeing Europa League qualification next season

Dendoncker would be comfortable with tonight’s commentary team

Evening all Iwas quite surprised to see Saiss dropped but no probes with having Donk involved. Hope Dioc has a good game & links up well with Adama

Couldn’t possibly comment on non UK sanctioned streaming sites..... except our man is from
Passendale near Ypres and is a Flemish (Dutch) speaker.

Corner very well earned by Raul taken short but goes for throw in. Traore’s first cross is hit way too hard

Ivybridge Wolf

I was in Ypres (or ieper as the Flemish call it) and Passendale last October ........ not a french speaker in sight!! 15 miles south, if that, and it’s all French.

Not much happening on the pitch thus far at Molineux. We desperately need 3 points tonight. They are at least doubling upon Traore this evening

Great bustling raid forward by Raul beating two players twice & still getting a shot away. Donk concedes a corner which is wasted by Palace .
Sakho in pain and needing treatment for possible hamstring injury

Sakho replaced by Kouyate. Another cross by Adama goes deep but out of play.
Boly loses the ball and a chance goes to Schlupp but his shot is just wide of the post

That is true but it too is in a Traditional Flemish area however being the capital and with The language of royalty, government and law Being french, it has taken over. In fact , the Flemish language was suppressed for many years In officialdom. I could go on ........ The TV screen has gone blank (Sm6)

Well that was a goal worthy of me getting me off the subject of Belgium!

Superb ball from Moutinho, Doc in a brilliant forward positive and Dear Podence heads from 5-6 yards. Really excellent move!!

A bit of late pressure from Palace, 3-4 minutes of free kick, corner, free kick, possession and approach play. Defended very well and still 60 seconds left of the half

Three added minutes played and it’s half time. A really well created goal for PD to open his account with, which has brightened up an otherwise pretty poor game. Saha and Ayew are doing their best to play the referee with their antics and I fear he falls for most of them which is a worry to me. We need another storming second half performance now to try and equal Spurs’ GD
Wolves 1 Palace 0

Ivybridge Wolf
20/07/2020 21:19
Fair comment Chesh, a poor half of little entertainment brightened up by another really good goal by Wolves. What is it with us since the restart, we don’t score half as many as we should but when we do, they all seem very good goals indeed.

It’s the same as Burnley however, and all other matches, 1 goal leads are never enough, we really need another one (or more) because I would be surprised not to see some chances opening up in the second half for Palace who haven’t been that bad and are certainly not out of it ..... and yes, ideally another 3 to overtake the Spurs GD.

One final word on Belgium, and I am receiving no fee from their tourist board here, but I urge all who are able, to visit Bruges (Brugge in Flemish ...... it another Flemish town , for the record!). A wonderful, mystical city with plenty of Belgium beer and only 80 minutes drive from the tunnel. Watch the film ‘In Bruges’ to whet your appetite, a modern day classic in its own right. If you time it right, you could even spend an evening watching Club Brugge play football.

Great play by Jonny down left wing. Excellent cross by Adama into the danger area put out for a corner. Doesn’t clear first man

Ivybridge Wolf

Clear handball there from Zaha there whilst on the ground and the ref inexplicably gave a free kick to Palace. If they’d have scored from that I would have been fuming

It'd be nice to finish 6th, but as 7th gets us Europa league football it isn't the end of the world if we miss the coveted 6th spot. I'm looking forward to our Europa league games more than the end of this league which seeing pool run away with it has been a damp squid in many ways although we have had some fantastic results notably the victories against spurs and city home/away

Ivybridge Wolf
20/07/2020 21:36
Dare I say it, we playing decent stuff this half. Look a lot more dangerous and stretching the Palace defence.

PD should have got another after a good effort by Adama. One hour played - another corner fails to beat the first man. Another foul by McCarthy gets him a yellow card

Cheshire wolf
20/07/2020 21:40
Ayew goes down in agony after hardly being touched by CC and once again the ref buys it & gives CC a yellow card. Free kick cleared well. I agree with Ivy we are playing better and Palace are struggling to cope with us.

Brilliant Traore right wing play, crosses, scuffs off Jimenez but Jonny with plenty to do and back to goal, turns and shoots powerfully into the back of the net. Another really good finish

Good attempt by Neves to pick out Neto in the 6 yd box. 2 minutes plus added time to play. Time to pick our Man of the Match and my choice is Joao, he has been at the heart of everything this evening and he and Neves have bossed the midfield so well

Pot shot by Zaha well collected by Rui.
Jota pulled down as he breaks to chase a Neves pass, but the ref opts to blow the final whistle.
I have thought all season that Palace are one of the worst teams in the League, are a dirty team and rely on Zaha and Ayew playing the referees too much, and my opinion isn’t changed tonight. They were as awful as we were good, only we were even better!!
A good win which puts us back in 6th and sets things up nicely for our final game of the season at Stamford Bridge on Sunday
Wolves 2 Palace 0

That’s it. League football is finished at Molineux for 2019/20 and thankfully on a high! I demand a lap of honour.

A very decent second half performance, completely in control, and comfortable to watch .... for once. Not just comfortable however, enjoyable too. Two really well worked goals.

Whilst we’ve lost the initiative from a GD perspective we now have a difficult last match versus Chelsea at Stamford Bridge where I believe only a Wolves win will guarantee us 6th spot, but there again I don’t understand the permutations for the Europa. One things for sure, I cannot see Spurs losing to Palace on tonight’s reckoning.

The reality is, that we now have 59 points which is already 2 better than last year, thus yet again a season of advancement, so excellent stuff for us Wolves fans.

Great stuff, back at Molineux on 6th August now, for the Olympiakos second leg.

UTW!
