When I left home on this Good Friday morning (6 years ago today) my personal record goals witnessed at a match was seven. Wolves 4 -3 Leicester 03/04, a couple of Argyle matches versus Peterborough and Chesterfield and even an Albion match in 1986 when Bully scored twice for them - at the Hawthorns (there's an explanation!!). Little did I realise that as I got on the A38 / M5 on that easter holiday morning that would all change which is still, for me, to be beaten. And to cap it all, the first 30,000 plus crowd at Molineux for many a year (30,110).
All in all it turned out to be a bit of a 'classic', a ten goal thriller when we went behind, we took the lead, Rotherham clawed it back and all was lost, then an amazing final few minutes to make it 6-4 to us.
We were already promoted, however the entertainment was terrific in a match where Rotherham, in the top six themselves, never ever gave up and caused all sorts of problems .... as I remember. That and two hattricks, one for Dicko and another for Agard with an incredible five goals in the last 10 minutes. To think that after 80 minutes I was sitting on an impressive 3-2 correct score prediction which would have paid out £100 plus.
After 88 minutes and 4-4, my word it got a bit gloomy but on a lovely day, the atmosphere turned into a frenzy with a sumptuous, remarkable, wonderful strike from our then captain Sam Ricketts which flew like a rocket into the back of the net. Pandemonium and that was just me. And to cap it all KMac swept in the sixth to complete a truly memorable day.
Of course, there were a couple of embarrassing pitch invasions after our 5th and 6th goal but the football itself was brilliant.
After the match the Express and Star published a panoramic picture of the 30K plus crowd, the link is below. If you were there, it's possible to get right in and find yourself. I can see both me and my son ..... to the right of the W2 sign in the Billy Quiet, 9 up from behind the right end of the 'Quality Palted Plastics' sign behind the chap taking a slurp of his drink!
Just amazing to think all this happened 6 years ago. You could not make up what has happened since, could you? But that season and this match in particular was special too.
Keep well all.
