Jota and Neves celebrate

By Wolves
February 26 2020

And so..... Wolves ambitions to excel in this year's Europa League continue when they face RCD Espanyol in the return leg of the final 16 knockout stage in Barcelona tomorrow evening. Wolves take a 4 - 0 lead into the game from the first leg courtesy of a fantastic display of a hatrick by Diogo Jota and another long distance smash from Ruben Neves.

Fans will be hoping Head Coach Nuno Espirito Santo and his team can attain Wolves' first ever win in Spain, to be sure of going through to the Quarter Finals of the competition. It is generally suspected that Espanyol will put out a better team than the one last week, and of course there is the suspicion that Nuno may rest a few of his players for the important upcoming PL match at Spurs on Sunday. We may perhaps see Daniel Podence make his first start and Max Kilman may feature in another game, possibly alongside Ruben Vinagre.

JUST A REMINDER - THIS GAME STARTS AT 5:55PM

The game will be televised on BT Sport 1. This board will attempt to keep members up to date with the progress of the game and board members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those unable to see it.

We will be in the round before the quarter-finals (well, hopefully) and looking at some of the sides that seem as though they will be there as well, this is when it will heat up.

Thanks Andy, and I would agree that if we get through the heat gets turned up!!

I see that Rangers have knocked out Braga tonight.

An intersting line-up fpr the game with some anticipated changes. Neves doesn't figure at all:

Nice chance for MGW to shine. And for Podence to make his mark. Thought Ruddy might have got a run-out.
Clearly focusing on Sunday

Only just tuned in. Looks to be a bit cagey so far. Rui makes a good save but the striker was clearly offside. VAR is in use tonight

27/02/2020 18:14
Boly attacking was slow to get back resulting in Espanyol goal

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 18:15
Willy Boly loses the ball in midfield, Valeri attacks dopn the left wing and the cross is well converted to give Espanyol the lead

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 18:20
Podence centres to Adama who needs two attempts but converts with the second. Adama is already on a yellow card apparently

Traore scores off a beautiful Doherty pass 5-1

Wolves have settled into their stride now and are largely dictating the game. Espanyol are poor - they went close to getting a second but missed it and Calleri was adjudged offside anyway

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 18:46
Good break between MGW Podence & Adama but final pass from MGW is poor.
Half time whistle goes. Wolves are very much holding their own despite an early setback when Espanyol took their goal well, but Adama struck back swiftly aided by DP.

Half Time 1-1 (5-1 to Wolves).
We grew into the game with a bit of fluidity after the equalizer but there were a few shaky moments in defense that a better quality team might have punished more. Anyway we are in better shape than when we started today with the away goal.

Lupinehowler

Not our best performance but holding our own so far.
Would like to see Campana given an outing and perhaps rest Traore for Spurs match.
Podence looking as if he is settling into our formation and style of play quite nicely.

Evening all - didn't realise it was early kick off!

Cheshire wolf

Restarted and DP makes a good run and shoots just over the bar

Evening Wolverina - you must have missed this post last pm as I put a reminder on it! Don't know wher the commentary has gone! I can manage without Jim Beglin I think!!

Sorry Cheshire - been a bit preoccupied! Seems to be going OK!

Cheshire wolf

The crowd is pretty sparse in the stadium - but they cheer up when a penalty is given against Kilman for a high boot. Caller I sends Rui the wrong way and restores Espanyol's lead

High kick from Max K gives Espanyol another chance for amateur dramatics. Penalty (dodgy) 2-5

Vinagre replaced by Saiss

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 19:17
MGW put through by Doc and he's pulled back on the edge of area but gets nothing!!

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 19:19
MGW then takes out his frustration in a tackle & gets a yellow card just before he's replaced by Neto

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 19:22
Nasty challenge by Bargas on Coady gets him a yellow card

wolverina
27/02/2020 19:22
Too many cards being picked up. They just need to stay calm and it's in the bag!

27/02/2020 19:27
Lopez shoots from 25 yards but easy for Rui. Fairly even game at the moment

On balance Espanyol are a pretty rubbish team!!

Podence pass to Doherty who is in the box and puts it neatly away 2-2 (6-2).

No Cheshire. Dire stuff, and now we ship a third goal in 91st minute

wolverina
27/02/2020 19:49
Well we're through. Not a great night for us but if you're going to have a relatively poor performance, do it with 4 goals in the bag! Now for Spurs...

`
27/02/2020 19:51
Im not sure who it was that said " Espanyol werent a bad team " after the first leg but check out the Spanish league table - they're sh1te. Tougher challenges ahead

Cheshire wolf
27/02/2020 19:54
Three added minutes have been played - to my surprise- & the final whistle blows. Espanyol win by
3 - 2 on the night but Wolves move into the next round with an aggregate score of 6 - 3
Not a particularly memorable game against a generally poor team, but I'm sure Nuno will be unhappy with the goals conceded.
All eyes now on tomorrow's draw - Rangers, Basel, Bayer Leverkusen & Roma are also through so far

`
27/02/2020 19:58
Assuming they get past fc clunge , sevilla are the team to be avoided in the last 16

Lupinehowler
27/02/2020 20:03
A lacklustre performance generally speaking. Was about to sing the praises of Neto and he then misses an open goal!!! Kilman impresses again and Podence has a full game under his belt with two assists. MGW failed to take his chance and I can see Nuno losing patience with him.
So much talk about keeping a clean sheet and our defence gets all dozy and will need to sharpen up before we play Spurs.
Still, some players rested so roll on Sunday.

Ivybridge Wolf
27/02/2020 20:45
We’re through but disappointing on the night. Neto nets his open goal and we win, simple as but we probably didn’t do enough to deserve that but a draw would have been fair. Complacency? Just off the pace? Not sure but in cup football the biggest question is if you’m in the hat and we am!
I said they weren’t a bad side in the first match, Angry, especially at the start! Very neat and tidy on many occasions, kept the ball well but no cutting edge. Clearly no where near good enough to progress and always there for the taking.
Is the draw tomorrow?

27/02/2020 20:59
Well they're bl00dy awful Ivy , yes the draw is tomorrow . I'd like Inter milan as it's the foreign team I used to support as a kid but whether I'd be able to go due to the man made corona virus is another matter

`
27/02/2020 21:01
BTW as it stands we're 4th favourites to win it

Andy Fincher
27/02/2020 21:51
Obviously the main thing is we are through. Should have won 3-2, Neto should have tried pulling his shirt over his head before taking his shot. What a miss! That being said though, he did ok overall once he came on.
Defence was a bit sloppy and MGW continues to frustrate. I actually thought that was Kilman's weakest match. Up to now he has always looked at home when he has played and a definite penalty.
Don't want to seem like I'm moaning too much. To reach the last 16 without playing our best is pretty good going.
I hope we don't get a British side in the next round, not that it would bother me who we get as we can beat anyone of them but we play those sort of sides every week and I would like the European "thing" to go on as long as possible.

Andy Fincher
27/02/2020 22:06
Some big sides have gone. Ajax, Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon are all out and Arsenal currently losing.
