Match Thread: Aston Villa vs Wolves - Carabao Cup 4th Round
Local Challenge
By Wolves
October 30 2019
Wolves make the short trip to Villa Park this evening to reignite their local rivalry in the 4th Round of the Carabao Cup. This is the first of two matches within two weeks between the teams as the Premier League game at Molineux is on 10th November
Wolves fans will be keen to see their team proceed to the next round of this competition at the expense of their local rivals, but it will undoubtedly be a challenging game, as Villa have settled well into the Premiership under Dean Smith and his team. Wolves will surely implement some rotation of players following the games last Thursday and Sunday which largely featured the same players. Sadly Willy Boly will definitely be missing and Ryan Bennett is also likely to be unfit. Whether some of the youngsters such as Dion Sanderson and Taylor Perry will get their chance during the game remains to be seen, but they are certainly getting closer.
This board will hopefully carry some commentary during the game, and members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those unable to follow it.
All change for tonight's game with only Cutrone retaining his starting place. Many of the Under 23 Squad start with Ryan Bennett captaining the side, whilst Rui Patricio is the only recognised first team player on the bench:
I agree with this selection, gives a much needed rest to the senior players but all these competitions and squad changes savages my prediction league status.
Good spell from Wolves, defending well then breaking effectively and pressing Villa when they are in possession. Just need to string together some good passes when attacking
I think it is interesting to see how the youngsters are playing very much in the same style as the first team.
El Ghazi is fed by Lansbury and he puts it under John Ruddy
Villa 1 Wolves 0

an angry wolf Following the updates but have to admit villa kids vs wolves kids doesnt really interest me
I know what you mean Angry but I don't really think it's Villa kids. With the likes of Hourihane, Elmohamedy, El Ghazi, Taylor, Lansbury and Davis in their team they have a great deal more experience than our team.
I cant stand this competition personally and won't be sorry to see us out.. it's not much more prestigious than the checkatrade trophy these days lets be honest with every club putting out kids or people they want to sell in the shop window.
It’s bad news how this competition is often treated but I firmly maintain it’s something we can reasonably expect to see Wolves progress, even potentially win. To do that, with the likes of Oxford and Colchester in the quarterfinals, must be incentive to ‘have a go’.
Half time whistle goes and Wolves trail to the one decent attempt from Villa. Our team of largely inexperienced youngsters have worked hard and defended well, but need to do better when in possession of the ball. Cutrone has been anonymous whilst Neto, Campbell and Vinagre have made some good runs down the wings. They are up against a lot of experience in the Villa side and it shows!
Villa 1 Wolves 0
since the only thing that happened was the goal, they just showed it from about nine different angles. Two things were clear; our defence was wrongfooted Vinagre and Bennett, but also the shot was not that hard and Ruddy got a hand to it. Think Patricio would have saved it but perhaps that is a bit unkind. In any case there was just ONE shot on target in total from the two teams.
an angry wolf Maybe Cheshire regarding villa , but have you seen Liverpools side tonight as an eg of how the big clubs treat the cup. 11 changes says it all
I don't disagree Angry, but L'pool still have the likes of the Ox, Origi and Milner in their side, because the teams have considerably bigger squads than we do, which I appreciate is a choice of Nuno's. We only have Ruddy & Bennett as our experienced players on the pitch.
I as just going to say how Cutrone hasn't had many chances to shine because he has had very little supply.
Villa score from a free kick, which Elmohamedy gets the credit for
Villa 2 Wolves 1
Villa putting the pressure on us now, and our defenders are resorting lumping it up the pitch to clear it. Neto breaks into the penalty area and goes down under pressure from ElGhazi, but nothing given. Neto is replaced by Cristovao. Neto arguing with Nuno when he gets to the bench -clearly unhappy at being subbed!
Well we will leave the Keogh tag for a while then as he has finally scored in a 2-1 defeat to the villa reserves. According to 5 live villa should have won by more.. what a wretched week for the club with boly injured , Fosun perhaps looking to sell up and this
Final whistle is blown and Wolves (cubs) lose by 2 - 1. Nuno gave a lot of his young players a chance this evening against a vastly mor experienced Villa team and they certainly were not shown up. Kilman and Sanderson stood out for me amongst them whilst Perry did well setting up Cutrone for his goal. I don't think we'll ever really relax whilst Vallejo is at right back! Cutrone tried very hard up front largely on his own, but had very little service and managed to score our only goal. I hope the first team regulars have enjoyed their night off, and are looking forward to their trip to the Emirates on Saturday.
