Doc - 2018 Match Winner

By Wolves
October 27 2019

Dreadful news for Wolves fans today as the squad travel to St James Park without key defender Willy Boly who reportedly has a fractured fibula following a training ground ankle injury.

Boly has been a massive player for Wolves in defence this season and his loss will compound the fact that the defence is also missing Ryan Bennett through injury. However young Max Kilman stepped in and played well on the left side of defence at Bratislava midweek, and will possibly keep his place. After a srong match which included a goal Romain Saiss may also expect to hold on to his place in the starting eleven today, possibly at the expense of Ruben Neves again. Pedro Neto is still recovering from an injury so is unlikely to feature.

The game is part of Sky's 'Super Sunday' package and will be screened frpm 1pm with the game kicking off at 2pm. Updates will hopefully be posted on this board during the game, and members are encouraged to post their observations for those unable to follow the game.

Several changes from Thursday's starting line-up for today's game. Kilman in fact drops to the bench with Saiss returning to left back and possibly Dendoncker or Doherty starting at right back. Adama starts which will please many Wolves fans

Lively start by Wolves Joao gets a shot away but no power behind it.
Our ref today is Kevin Friend

Loss of Boly is certain to be felt by the team and not just for this game.
Hopefully the squad can rally and keep some momentum.
Today’s team looks capable of taking on a fairly lacklustre Newcastle team so fingers crossed for three points today.

1st corner to Wolves earned by Jonny.

Good play by Adama with a good cross. Another corner but it's cleared. Wolves very comfortable so far. Concern for Jota as he is clattered by Fernandez. Being checked for concussion

Seems Jota is OK & back on. Good block by Saiss. A lot of empty home seats & not much atmosphere there. Lascelles gets in front of Jota, falls over & gets a free kick!

Just noticed that MGW isn't on the bench. I reckon Nuno must have read Angry's review after Thursday's game!!

Home fans becoming frustrated by their team. Almiron warms them up with a chance he puts into side netting. Neves tries a long distance shot but doesn't really connect

Wolves fail to clear a corner and Lascelles heads home well against the run of play

Could be difficult today - hoping for the best!

Wolves failing to get a grip on the game & sitting back too much. Thankfully Utd not really posing a great threat up front considering their possession

Let's hope that Nuno gets the whip out at half time!

Joao takes a free kick from the left side, Jota gets a shot away but it's weak.
First half ends after 2 added minutes. A pretty dull game so far with little adventures from either side. United are a poor team despite their high profile signings and midfield brotherly duo, and it has taken a good header from a defender for them to take the lead, after Jota failed to clear & gave the ball back to them following a corner.
United 1 Wolves 0

I must go out in fifteen minutes so will have to discontinue making notes then.
Second half underway with no changes, but I think Leander has swapped places with Doc so he can link up with Adama. Good break forward by Adama gets a corner

I'm not impressed with Wolves apart from the defence today. Lacking imagination and guile. Neves is anonymous

Jota puts a header way over the bar when he should have scored

We're in real trouble not just today but for the season.. our best defender out indefinitely with no real quality upfront apart from Jimenez from time to time when his broken arm that never heals doesnt bother him. I didnt subscribe to oldngolds doom forecast but Boly out changes the dynamics completely

We've been effectively castrated wolverina as a team

Angry and I agree. Boly out long term is a game changer. A not very free scoring team that starts shipping goals is going one way. Trip to the Emirates suddenly looks a very different proposition.

I think we need to hang on to mid table for dear life until we get to the January window. Some large money needs to come out for 3-4 players to see us to safety.

This league is brutal.

I caught the last five minutes and Doc should have scored the winner, but It disappoints me to see him so frequently in the position where our striker should be to score!!

oldngold
27/10/2019 17:58
Agreed but that just underlines that we are not a great goal scoring team but one that is well organised, disciplined with a strong defence from which we are able to launch fast attacks that get us the crucial goals to win some really big games, but not turn over lesser opposition with any consistency. With a thin squad now taking on long term injuries to key players that approach could easily unravel. If we start getting turned over by top sides with no change to our vulnerability against "lesser" sides then you're heading for a relegation battle.

For all Coady's attributes he can show occasionally that he is a converted midfielder. And it should be clear why he is yet to make Southgate's squad. We are going to need Bennett fit and on his best form ASAP with Saiss, another converted midfielder on the left. Have to say that looks very shaky.

What is annoying is that we shouldn't be in this position at all

It's hard to believe just how bad Vallejo is .. what was nuno thinking if it was his decision to sign him or was it other characters behind the scenes- even with Boly out he cant make the starting 11. I'm a big fan of him as a manager , but part of a managers remit is to identify quality acquiring players and if Cutrone/Vallejo fit that bill I'm the virgin Mary. I agree with oldngold, an important transfer window in January.

If just the absence of Boly brings into question whether we are good enough to stay in the PL then we are arguably not good enough to stay in the PL.

And folks need to get the Europa league out of their system. Sure we want to do well in that competition. But I don't think any of the clubs we've played so far would even survive in the Premier League. Let's go as far as we can, but staying in the PL is absolutely everything.

And right now there are question marks over that.

We're being exposed by this "keep a small tight squad" approach. And make no mistake that is what Nuno wants, as well as a more "cautious" approach in the transfer market.

Nuno has complete control. What he wants he gets. Hence, responsibility is his.

The Clocks went back this weekend. The football season has really started, and we've just lost our most important player. Let battle commence.

Losing Boly is a massive blow, no argument there, and we would be far better with him available but with or without him we won't go down. As things stand at the moment there is only Liverpool that have lost less matches than Wolves and although we could obviously do with turning some of these draws into wins, we are currently only two points off our finishing position last season.
As for being in Europe, we have been waiting almost 40 years for it and I hope we stay in for as long as possible.

Unless you are city/Liverpool, if you take out the key player which Boly is, then it makes a colossal difference to any team. One player can make a 20 point ( 7 games) swing in a season so in our case it can make the difference between top half or a relegation battle with football having ridiculously fine lines. I don't think we will be in a relegation battle but hopes of a season similar to the one just gone have disappeared with Bolys injury in all likelihood. We have gone from being one of the best defensive teams in the country with a powder puff attack to a dodgy defensive team with a powder puff attack. The only saving grace is a top class keeper despite dissenting views on here and a top half of the prem midfield and even that needs improving.

Oldngold you say " nuno has complete control " but you don't know that- many of the players we signed have undoubtedly had affiliations with mendes and probably signed without nuno initially targeting them. No one can say we wont be relegated either.. the number of defeats is irrelevant Andy as too many results like today will see us knocking around the bottom 3. Draws are terrible results since the 3 point system was introduced meaning the number of defeats a team has in a season are about as useful a statistic as a boat in the sahara desert I'm afraid. The number of victories is what defines a teams season

I don't know that for definite, but I read about the scouting system run under the direction of Thelwell monitoring hundreds of players all over the world. They filter and reduce it down to prospects they put in front of Nuno. He makes the final decision if they are to be shortlisted. I'll try and dig the interview out.

Does Mendes have a word in Nuno's ear and is he influential? Obviously very much so. Do Nuno / Thelwell stay in touch with Mendes and other top agents about available talent? I would be concerned if Thelwell wasn't spending 7x24 on that. He has been quoted as saying recruitment is just about everything to a football club.

It appears to be clear that Nuno calls the shots on the team, squad and recruitment. Fosun do what he says. My understanding is that Fosun wanted to spend more this summer and Nuno was urging caution. Could be wrong on that. Anyway, obviously Mendes remains influential but I don't detect we've had Mendes players foisted on us, otherwise we'd have forked out 30 Million for Andre Silva by now.

It has to be said that Nuno has been excellent at finding solutions to several very different problems as they have arisen over quite a long period now. Something we've haven't had in a manager for well since I can't remember. Hopefully he and his team can do that.

One problem is that we are not the only club struggling to find decent centre halves with Boly potentially on some very lucrative radars in the next transfer window himself.
