Match Thread: Manchester City vs Wolves

As tough as it gets

By Wolves
October 6 2019

Wolves travel to Manchester City's Etihad stadium today for the fearsome challenge of trying to beat City at their own ground

After their two wins in the past week Wolves could not be better prepared to enter the Etihad stadium with the hope of leaving with points, in the hope of continuing their rise up the Premier League. Man City however will also be extremely keen to take three points from the match in order to stay in touch with Liverpool after their last gasp win yesterday. Diogo Jota will be missing from the line-up today as he still struggles with a toe injury, but Nuno is not reporting any other injuries.

This board will hopefully carry a commentary on today's game, but board members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those unable to follow it.

A few changes to today's team with the notable exception of Doherty in the starting line-up:

Patricio, Boly Coady Saiss, Traore, Dendoncker, Neves, Moutinho, Vinagre Jimenz, Cutrone

Whilst on the subs bench we notably have no strikers!!
Ruddy, Vallejo, Bennett, Jonny, Kilman, Gibbs-White, Doherty

oldngold

Why is he starting Vinagre and not Jonny. This looks too open. I hope I am wrong, but if Vinagre gets out of position Mahrez could have a field day. And no Doc on the right hand side. Traore needs to have a very good defensive game today.

Here we go

First break from City but Aguero's effort is stifled

Cutrone misses a sitter- as said when he signed his goal scoring record is pathetic despite him having a few decent touches.

Cheshire wolf

Cutrone breaks and is in a one on one with Emerson and shoots hopelessly wide

Ivybridge Wolf

5Live very critical of Cutrone’s effort. Should be 1-0 to us

First corner to City - well taken by Rui

Saiss down holding his hamstring after a tussle with Aguero. Might be the end of his game

06/10/2019 14:14
Saiss came back on but not for long . Substitute Bennet after 12 mins

Cheshire wolf
06/10/2019 14:16
Saiss goes down again so looks like Bennett will replace him for his 100th appearance. Good header by Vinagre to clear the ball prior to this.

we'd be two up if we had decent strikers at the club

Cheshire wolf
06/10/2019 14:21
Well organised play from Wolves at the moment. I see a problem with Traore at wing back as his defending agiNst the likes of Sterling & Mahrez could be a definite weakness

Cheshire wolf
06/10/2019 14:22
Very good save by Ederson to deny Raul then Cutrone

Ivybridge Wolf

Burger me, 3 massive chances for us this half and nothing to show for it. So utterly disappointing. We have to score

Rally good pressing by Wolves to deny City opportunities. Ederson had to come right out of his area to get to the ball before Cutroneand passed it to Aguero who put it over the bar!!

Cheshire wolf
06/10/2019 14:47
Raul sets up Cutrone again but he is too right footed when he should have kept it on his left.

Half time. Thankful to be even but my word we should be winning, or at least scored. My pre match concerns of Traore at RWB have not yet been exploited, in fact a decent well organised defensive Wolves performance

We may very well rue those missed chances. Patricio’s saves were fairly routine but another goalie might have let one in.

What separates the top teams from sides like ours are the quality of the strikers as we all know city will almost certainly get at least one good chance at some stage and put it in.

Ivybridge Wolf
06/10/2019 14:59
Of the 3 chances, Cutrones miss was truly awful, great block for the second (but a brilliant chance none the less) and Jiminez should have finished the third, unclear for me on the penalty. Will look at MOTD 2 later.

Just can’t believe Cutrone didn’t even get his chance on target, the easiest of the 3 by a mile

Indeed Ivy , he has some nice touches but is never in a million years a "striker" ( waits for maisey taw) and his finishing here and previously at milan shows that. You'd think we would have coaches here who would just say forget placement and focus on the goal as a whole target hitting it hard and low.. more times than not it will go in

That's still sinking in. Great professional performance. Two fantastic saves from Rui. Back three solid, in fact the team defended well. Jiminez did brilliantly for the two goals and two fantastic finishes. A shame Cutrone can't finish but hopefully he will go on to prove me wrong.
I must admit I was unsure about the starting line up but Nuno knows more than any of us.

£200 better off as a result ..... the cherry on the icing on the cake!!

UP THE WOLVES!!!

The coolness of both the finishes was just excellent. I'm pretty sure that we all like Traore, can see his skill, though have all questioned him in somes ways. I've said he's earnt his place into our side this season, however was worried he was RWB today. To be frank, he was very competent in that position today, keeping Sterling and the like at bay, however when he went up front, a very good sub of Doc for Cutrone, Traone showed what he can do and finished the Citizens off ... something that should have happened in the first half!! Congratulations to him, a wonderful individual effort and to all of the team, the whole defense were outstanding, Boly and also Bennett in particular.

Brilliant Wolves, just brilliant!

To be fair AAW, he was playing in a 3-5-2 so he actually was a striker today (as I said in that thread). What a weird decision by Nuno to change him from a defender to attacker though, hey.....

an angry wolf
06/10/2019 16:56
The only weird decision Maisey is to not play Traore as an offensive player - hopefully he starts further forward. Can he be any worse a finisher than Crutone etc.. Jimenez and Crutone are both decent but neither can finish their dinner at times let alone a chance.

I agree completely, he is very effective as an offensive player, couldn't understand why he didn't start in the front 3 in Istanbul but I've given up questioning Nuno over time as generally he gets it spot on. Cutrone is extremely hard working but so far his finishing and ability generally leaves a lot to be desired, and hopefully Raul just needs a rest - it can't have been easy playing with a broken wrist for 7 months to be fair.

Jiminez is higher class than Crutone, he can finish, he just isn’t at the moment. His work rate is immense and I think usually effective. Crutone has everything to prove, and has done nothing today to suggest he can replace Jota (when fit) although he does possess some great touches and is another hard worker. Maybe it’ll come for him too?

Traore, well ..... absolutely delighted for him. Two very similar finishes which strongly resemble his winner v West Ham last season!

As for execution of those exclaiming tiredness following european fixtures ....... harsh but fair (Sm6)

lol well we were told that Burnley are still suffering over a year after they lost to a greek team not even qualifying for the Europa and after travelling to one of the most hostile places in Europe away from home we beat city away - so much for that theory. Even on the radio pre match they kept wittering on about fatigue for us after Thursday but as Traore got his second they changed tune saying the run in the Europa has helped morale etc etc. They state any old@#$%&to fill the airwaves.

A good match to go to Billericay, perhaps we can attribute your attendance for our upturn in fortunes? On Traore, a great friend of mine who sadly passed away last year, a lifelong Wolves nut called him ‘The Train’ , that’s exactly what he is, an express version and I don’t think I can remember a faster player I’ve seen at Molineux.

On to Burnley, it is still surely a great accomplishment and shock that after a mentally gruelling Europa league prelim exit campaign last season, they managed to rise from the ashes to beat Everton yesterday.

He hasn't had time to have surgery on it since he broke it AAW, he's been playing through it because he didn't want to let us or Mexico down. God knows if he'll have it fixed over the international break now he's been given a breather by Mexico.
