Match Thread: Besiktas v Wolves (Europa League)

Besiktas Stadium

By Wolves
October 3 2019

Wolves are in Turkey ready to face Besiktas for the first ever time tonight in the next stage of their Europa League adventure.

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo hopes to build on the confidence-boosting win over Watford on Saturday and see Wolves establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in this competition. Both teams will be hoping to put their opening losses behind them from two weeks ago. Wolves will surely see some changes to personel for tonight's game, in view of the upcoming visit to the Etihad on Sunday, and will definitely be without striker Diogo Jota who is still struggling with a toe injury.

This board will hopefully carry a commentary of the game for those unable to follow it, and board members are encouraged to post their observations as the game progresses. Please remember that kick-off is at 17:55 hrs GMT

I think this has 1-1 all over it

Team news is that Dendoncker and Traore drop to the bench, with Neves restored to midfield and Gibbs-White seemingly linking upfront with Jimenez and Neto.

Line-up: Patricio, Boly, Coady, Saiss, Doherty, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny, Gibbs-White, Jimenez, Neto

Subs: Ruddy, Bennett, Vallejo, Vinagre, Dendoncker, Traore, Cutrone

I think probably so too Angry, but also that we shouldn't underestimate the Turks. They have Liverpool's Karius in goal tonight.

Given both teams poor recent form and the hostile home crowd looking for improvement I am anticipating a home win. Hopefully not and if we turn up from the first whistle we may squeeze something out of this.

Isnt Karius the ex Liverpool keeper that cost them the CL final a bit back? The Turkish league is generally poor but Besiktas have an excellent home record in it- that said the only thing they are proficient at is harassing western women and flogging flea ridden mats to some poor soul wandering around the markets so I expect a result. I would have preferred to see Traore start and despite decent performances he continually gets left out of starting lineups for some reason... if he is being " rested" why aren't others.

Adama's improvement recently has been impressive, although all the commentators seem to continue with the 'lack of end product' line which is no longer true. Also I despair when MGW gets the ball because HIS improvement has been much slower (yes, I know his role in the Watford OG).

an angry wolf
03/10/2019 17:34
Traore still needs to improve on his "end product" but he has explosive pace and can beat defenders- MGW offers nothing other than enthusiasm which isn't much use at the level we play at these days. He probably had one of his better games at Watford but is still championship standard in virtually every thing he does. A broken clock is right twice a day and the odd decent game from MGW doesn't mean is can hack it at either premier/European level

Good news. It is live on TV here. Bad news; only on one of the Spanish language channels ( really must learn the lingo now I live in Texas.

And what is that kit they are wearing? They look like they are auditioning for a Tarzan movie.

Cheshire wolf

B'tas also have Arsenal player Elneny and Croatian W-Cup finalist Vida in their side

03/10/2019 17:59
so much for the hostile environment - grounds half empty but suppose besiktas are used to playing in the champions league so this is small beer

chicagowolf
03/10/2019 18:02
OK they kicked off and the kit is NOT the jungle jim thing they were wearing

mgw already giving the ball away several times , get him off he's sh1te

Cheshire wolf

MGW just had a great opportunity to feed Raul but blew it. He has only been on the ball twice and hasn't produced a pass yet. however don't want to judge him at this stage of the game. Our midfield are gelling well and dealing with most of their threat so far

Cheshire wolf
03/10/2019 18:15
Ball gets stuck under Raul's feet on the edge of the box before he can get a shot away

Well I do , the guy is a liability - how he keeps getting games Ive no idea

Cheshire wolf

Free kick to B'tas from edge of our area comes to nothing. It is a hostile atmosphere but not only to us - they don't like it when their team are passing backwards!

chicagowolf
03/10/2019 18:22
Neto has had some nice touches but the defense has the better of him Dioga would have done well.

Cheshire wolf
03/10/2019 18:25
Neto' deflected cross saved by Karius at the edge of his goal. B'tas have had to sub their striker already - he had a 'coming together' with Saiss earlier!

chicagowolf
03/10/2019 18:25
lot of sloppy Wolves passes giving them too much space ominous

an angry wolf

Fair to say its not a classic so far

Boly blunder gives them the ball in a bad spot but their shot is WAY over the top, thankfully

Cheshire wolf
03/10/2019 18:33
More sloppy passing from Wolves, as well as the usual amount of passing back mean we are doing very little upfront

an angry wolf
03/10/2019 18:37
imagine watching this as a neutral, you'd be slitting your wrists

Cheshire wolf

Five mins plus added time to play in first half. Saiss gives another free kick away which is deflected for a corner

03/10/2019 18:41
Commentator says it is a good away performance, we came into the match as favourites so not sure what he means by that when we havent had a shot on goal yet. This is the Turkish league not the prem and besiktas are next to bottom in it

Cheshire wolf
03/10/2019 18:42
Excellent defending as always from Boly. Neto wastes a chance to get the ball over to Raul

chicagowolf

0-0 halftime. Big relief

chicagowolf
03/10/2019 18:45
Not ready to slit my wrists just yet, but I 'm glad I didnt pay for this. Watching TV which is live, with the sound from the Wolves website (which has a delay on it

chicagowolf
03/10/2019 18:49
stats don't count for much but we have had 164 passes, they have had 304. Time for Adama?

an angry wolf

is it free sound on the wolves website?

Lupy
03/10/2019 18:55
Again we are β€œholding our own β€œ against a team that seems to be there for the taking. I appreciate we are the away team but surely Nuno has recognised that the Besiktas team is short on confidence and we should be exploiting their nervousness.

A couple of fair crosses from MGW but nobody effective on the expand of them. Leander being prepared to come on. Traore puts a cross over but too close to Karius

Braga and Bratislava drew 2-2. Game on as they say.

I think Traore has to start now and Cutrone really cannot be far away from starting himself.

MGW should go on loan. Someone should give him videos of Mason Mount and Harry Wilson who to be fair are both a few years older. I think we should have tried a bit harder to get hold of Wilson.

Another clean sheet. Will need tenacious defence against City.

We seemed to crank it up in the final 10-15 and I'd say deserved. Not a classic by any means, as has been said, however we've won which is incredible important after the Braga match. Beautiful ball from Neves to set up Boly whose control and finish was just superb. Yes, I went wild!!

As for our 'first' goal being offside - total Bullsh!t decison from the linesman. Should have stood.

Well played Wolves, a good away performance became a very good away performance. Still plenty to do, 3rd in the group with Slovan Bratislava on top - who'd have thought that 2 matches ago?

UTW!!

Great result and although not the best of games I thought it was a good performance from Wolves. Have to agree that MGW doesn't seem good enough right now and although I am not knocking Neto, I don't think he is ready yet. I hate to say he was brought in as "one for the future" but I think he may be. Jiminez looks like he needs resting.
Boly was fantastic and Jonny not far behind and the group is wide open now.

By the way, I really liked the black shirts, gold shorts and gold socks.

I would prefer an all gold strip for European ties.

Yes, I would prefer all gold as well but I did like the kit last night.
