Match thread: Everton v Wolves

A little bit of luck?

By Ivybridge Wolf
September 1 2019

Back to the Premier League this afternoon as Wolves travel up to Liverpool to play Everton at Goodison Park.

After our fabulous efforts in Europe over the last few weeks, Wolves hope to take a bit of the Torino winning form into the Premier League today.

Wolves, thus far, have managed 3 consecutive league draws this season and will be searching for our first win of the season versus an Everton side, who have shuffled the pack over the summer (who hasn't?) and who will be equally and keenly looking for all 3 points.

Early days so far I know, however the performance was definitely lacking at Molineux last Sunday versus Burnley in the searing heat. All Wolves fans will be keeping their fingers crossed that we can return to the form we know we are capable of ...... and not relying on the good luck of a black cat to enhance our fortunes once again!!

Please feel free to pass comment on the match as it twists and turns, hopefully in Wolves favour .... Up The Wolves!

I'll be down the Duke of Cornwall this afternoon, signals are poor but wherever you are or doing, enjoy the match ...... this is going to be a test .... gain.

In my haste ... didn't fully appreciate the team changes. Cutrone gets his first start for Jota, Traore gets a deserved start, Vinagre and Saiss get the nod too!

Interesting stuff! Doc doesn't even get on the bench.

Interesting starting eleven, Nuno keeping his word about using the full squad. Everton defenders will have to be on their toes against VInagre and Traore.

An interesting choice of team indeed Ivy. Good to see Adama get a start after the success he has had in European games, and also a chance to see what Cutrone can do upfront with Raul. Hope Vinagre will be disciplined in his marauding runs up the wing and will make a name for himself. I think
Joao probably deserves a rest after playing most games this season and Saiss did well on Thursday by all accounts.

Dreadful mix up a the back between Coady & Patricio presents Richarlison with a chance which he easily inverts

Still plenty to play for. Everton got lucky when Coady/Patricio messed up but we have put equally as much pressure on them.
Cutrone looking lively but Raul doesn’t seem to be his usual self. Hats off to Traore who has the beatings of the Everton defenders.
Should be a good second half, fingers crossed.

Ivybridge Wolf

Not a brilliant half for Wolves. We’re just not firing on all cylinders yet are we.

Positives for Cutrone who might have scored twice but for two good blocks. Obviously Traore looks good going forward but he was nowhere for their 2nd.

What the hell was going on with their first goal? Bloody awful

Adama clearly still needs to focus on his defensive duties as Iwobi was lost totally by him for their second.

Here we go again with no changes. Willy Boly booked for fouling Richarlison who went down very dramatically!!
Bennett booked for pushing Coleman
Joao on to replace Saiss

Another good save from Rui to stop a Mina header from their corner

Five added minutes in which to find the equaliser

Cheshire wolf
01/09/2019 15:59
Boly takes out Richarlison on the touchline & gets a second yellow in 95th minute, and of course a red card.
All finished Everton win and we are 17th in the League, facing our next game without big Willy B. Quite a good match with a lot of frenetic action. We gave away a diabolical first goal which eventually cost us. Two well taken goals for us, but not enough today. International break to look forward to now & back to the drawing board!!
Everton 3 Wolves 2

I think its fair to say , our chances of troubling the top 6 are zero- our aim should be to avoid relegation and get to the latter stages of the cups. I've been saying for some time what a wretched player Vinagre is and what nuno sees in him I've no idea.. poor transfer window and a poor start to the season

Vinagre is a definite weakness, the Europa league will ensure the best we can hope for is the top ten this season. Stoke and Burnley still haven't recovered.

Another poor performance overall ladies and gents!

The solid defence of last year seems to be unhinged at the moment, the crisp passing, the diagonals, the sprinting down the wings getting behind the opposition last four largerly gone - so far this season. I wonder if the oppositions homework on our wing backs is paying off? Also the midfield is lacklustre by comparison and not linking up with the forwards as they have previously.

Yes, very disappointing. The biggest thing that surprised me in that second half is that we scored. Really brave header from Jiminez, from a Bennet long throw .... a methodology that's now led to 2 of our 4 league goals!

Boly, a bit of a numpty going in for that challenge, will now miss Chelsea at home.

I know you can't draw comparisons directly, however after these 4 fixtures we now have 3 points and lie 17th. From the exact corresponding fixtures last season we had acquired 9 points including a very unlucky 2-0 defeat v Leicester.

Something needs to spark our league form ... not sure what it is however. We don't seem to have any momentum.

so Burnleys last match in Europe was August 2018 and they still haven't recovered lol? The idea that 90 minutes one Thursday over a year ago is responsible for Burnleys fall down the league is ridiculous Cedric . The media is obsessed with finding links between things that don't exist, and anyone thinking one August afternoon in Greece when Burnley played Olympiakos in their last Europa game has physically /mentally exhausted the players over a year later should be certified as insane quite frankly.. you've been watching/listening to too many phone ins

Next game is Chelsea who we would expect to turn us over if they are on top form. That would put us in the relegation zone going away to Palace who I expect will also turn us over. After that we have a big relegation 6 pointer against Watford at home.

If we don't turn up and beat Watford we'll be in October with no wins, in the relegation zone with our next match away to Man City. If City hammer us 5-0 we'll be in real trouble.

This league is brutal. There are no obviously weak teams. Make no mistake we need to survive and that is not going to be easy.

I think we have had a great run but I am not sure we are actually as good as we think we are. And we may be regretting not paying the wages needed to bring in a top class box to box midfielder.

Having said that Everton are a very good side who may well break into the top 6. They are a better side than Wolves. It is that simple

You are taking my post too literally Angry. However the Europa journey did seem to be a catalyst for a dip in their fortunes, from which Stoke in particular have not yet turned around..

.

I agree we have had a poor start to the season but after 3 draws and a defeat bl00dy hell , I thought I was a glass half empty soul but yours is bone dry. We are due apparently to be beaten by a woeful Chelsea, turned over by palace and enter October with no wins after our relegation 6 pointer with Watford... I wouldnt want to be in the trenches with you if war broke out (Sm118) (Sm124)

I agree we won't be getting near the top 6 but we should still be looking at 12th and above quite comfortably in my opinion, and a decent run in Europe.

On Vinagre, he's still young and can be incredibly naive tactically and defensively but, speaking as someone who sees him live in action on a regular basis, he's clearly a talented footballer who will go on to become a top player. He's far from "wretched". He had an awful game at Everton but that's Nuno's fault, a quality team away from home is not the kind of game to be playing two gung ho wing backs.

Looking at 12th... what use is 12th? It doesn't really matter whether you see him live or on delayed pictures living on the moon- I form my own views of players.. I've also heard the likes of Leon Clarke and Andy Keogh described as talented by the superfans who go to every games so I'll form my own views on vinagre and he is nowhere near good enough for wolves or any premier league team. Vinagre will never be a " top " player lol and if I'm still on this site in 5 years I'll resurrect the thread when he is plying his trade at a much lower level.

Why is Everton away not the game to play two " gung ho " wingbacks then when clearly our record against better teams favours a counter attacking style. Vinagre didnt play many games for the full 90 minutes last season but two I can definitely recall out of the few he did were Huddersfield at home and Cardiff away so that didnt work either did it as he was cr*ap in those matches as well

Yes, and on course to be turned over by Palace and the relegation 6 pointer against Watford.

Must win games only 5 games in

I'd be a barrel of laughs in the Trenches

an angry wolf

No game is must win after 5 matches - so if we dont win is that it then? By definition a must win implies an apocalypse scenario arising if we don't. Calling a match between two teams who finished top half last season in the bottom 3 after 5 games a "relegation 6 pointer " is knee jerk reaction stuff at it's best. If we were top 4 after 5 games it wouldn't be a 6 pointer title decider any more than this is a relegation 6 pointer.

oldngold
18/09/2019 19:39
I agree my commentary was knee jerk. Didn't intend it to be, momentum got the better of me at the weekend.

As I said I'd be a barrel of laughs in the trenches.

Win tomorrow and a strong performance against Palace & the nerves will settle.

Well indeed oldngold, although if we fail to win either of the next two, I think it would be cause for genuine concern and certainly no blip which is hopefully what this is.
