Match Thread: Leicester City vs Wolves

August 11 2019

Wolves open their 2019-20 Premier League season today with a visit to loocal rivals Leicester City. It will be the first PL meeting between Nunu Espirito Santo and Brendan Rodgers.

Following their comprehensive win in Armenia in the Europa League this week Wolves will be hoping to continue of a high this afternoon and avenge the loss at their opponents ground early last season. Nuno has not appeared in a press conference or Official Site interview prior to this match, probably because of the travelling he has done with the team, however his mantra will undoubtedly continue to be unchanged.

We will hopefully have a commentary as the game develops on this site and would encourage board members to share observations for those unable to follow the game

We have the expected line-up today - very much the team which finished last season:

Patricio, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Dendoncker, Moutinho, Neves, Jonny, Jimenez, Jota

Subs: Ruddy, Vinagre, Saiss, Gibbs-White, Pedro Neto, Traore, Cutrone

Looking forward to a good game and result to match.

I think it will be interesting to see how Leicester's defence gel following the departure or McGuire especially after the way Jota & Raul performed together on Thursday night.

Cheshire wolf

Our referee today is Andre Marriner, with Jon Moss on VAR duty

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:03
First shot for Wolves.
Dendoncker.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:03
First shot comes from Leander after good build up by Jota, but high & wide

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:05
Looking like an open match, both teams looking to attack.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:08
Wolves having the majority of the ball so far

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:09
Free kick to Leicester on edge of box

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:10
Coady drags down Perez on edge of area - ping pong in the area & corner conceded

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:12
Leicester gaining the upper hand at the moment.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:13
City attacking through the centre. Appealing for fouls then Wolves get a free kick!!

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:15
No real threat from Wolves at the moment. Need to get better control of the midfield.

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:16
Another corner for Leicester

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:17
Perez takes on Bennett & gets their 2nd corner. Ultimately Chilwell takes a long distance shot but pulls it wide

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:20
Leicester dictating the play at the moment.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:22
Wolves are very well organised in defence and making it difficult for City to construct an attack. Perez goes down claiming a high tackle from Doc, but I don't think there was any contact!!

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:22
Wolves needing to put their foot on the ball and keep the ball for a while.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:24
Lost my stream at the moment

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:26
Argggh. Stream is playing up.

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:28
Must say that Leicester look the more effective at the moment.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:30
Back on!! Jota concedes unlucky hand ball whilst attacking. Neves loses possession and Ndidi unleashes a shot but pulls it wide. Wolves fans sing "Ruben Neves"!!

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:31
Jonny tugs back Ricardo who goes to ground, yellow card for Jonny

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:34
Ndidi falls over as Jota touches him & gets a free kick!

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:35
Wolves coming into the match at last.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:36
Boly & Bennett almost convert from free kick but it goes over the bar

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:38
Scramble in the Leicester box but comes nothing.

Leicester immediately responded with their own attack.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:38
Leicester miss a glorious chance to score. Thielemans put ball across 6 yd box and Vardy missed the tap in!!

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:40
Great attacking play by Jota but he pulls his shot wide.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:43
Very promising break by Jota & Jonny breaks down with a poor pass to Leander

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:44
Wolves midfield are being bossed by Leicester.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:44
No shots on target by either team so far

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:47
Wonderful opportunity for Jota who fluffs his lines at the crucial moment.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 14:49
Diogo Jota robs a defender on the line and breaks forward unchallenged. Then tries to make up his mind whether to cross or shoot, seemingly confuses himself and falls over!! Last action of 1st half.
Plenty of good play in the middle of the pitch but not so much in front of goal, several shots, but none on target. Very even game so far. Will be interesting to see whether any of our new strikers come off the bench

an angry wolf
11/08/2019 14:58
Ive been watching it on a decent free stream with no breaks in service , are you paying via that wolves tv Cheshire ? It shows just what a poor transfer window we've had for a club with aspirations of the top 6 where not a single signing makes our starting 11.

Lupy
11/08/2019 14:58
An entertaining first half but unless we improve in the second half we may well lose our opening match as Leicester look the more likely to score and are well up for this game.
Poor midfield display so far, none of our lads getting any time to settle on the ball.
Tiredness, who knows but we have to up the tempo in order to compete in this game.
C,mon lads.

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:03
Another wasted chance.
This time by Raul.

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:05
Wolves wasting opportunities at present.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:06
No Angry I'm probably watching the same stream as you!!
Great chances for Wolves wasted

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:07
A better start to the second half by Wolves.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:07
Our second corner already & Dendoncker converts
City 0 Wolves 1

Cheshire wolf

Disallowed via VAR for alleged handball

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:09
Disallowed for handball.

an angry wolf
11/08/2019 15:11
The handball obsession in football with penalties being given and incidents like this is killing the game- if only it was like the old days where common sense was used. How can Boly move is arm away from that unless he has no arms .. makes me want to give up watching the game tbh

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:12
Jota breaks on his own and shoots well wide. Think he may have been offside anyway

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:13
Time for a Cutrone to make an appearance.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:14
Great challenge from Joao to block Maddison's shot

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:16
Better from Wolves but still need a cutting-edge.

an angry wolf
11/08/2019 15:17
so to clarify with the new rules, if a defender blast a ball from 1 foot away at an attackers arm and he goes on to score a goal is disallowed. Why not then just aim for the arm everytime as a defender to ensure no goal will be given?

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:18
Soyuncu - Harry McGuire's replacement has played solidly in City's defence. Coady loses out to Vardy & concedes a corner which is wasted. Promising youngster Harvey Barnes on for City to replace Choudhury

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:20
Seemingly Neves received a yellow card for dissent- probably borne of frustration

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:22
We seem to have lost the initiative since the goal was disallowed.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:25
Bennett in a tussle with Vardy in Lan area but no penalty. He then stops Vardy & concedes a corner. 2nd corner from it. Wolves struggling to put passes together at the moment. Boly concedes another corner. Good attacking play from City & another corner

an angry wolf
11/08/2019 15:26
Both Jimenez and Jota are more attacking midfielders than strikers, neither of them can finish particularly well .. if they could the game would be won long ago

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:28
No subs made by us yet but it would add a bit of energy.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:29
Nuno needs to freshen things up here. I think Jota has run out of ideas this afternoon. Time for Cutrone to show what he can do.

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:32
Cutrone coming on for Jota

Shot from Barnes from edge of the area well taken by Rui

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:40
Jimenez brings out a save as well

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:43
Into last five minutes of normal time. Leicester having the better of play generally but our defence playing well and frustrating them

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:46
Leicester corner scrambled away.

4 added minutes to play

Our man of the match (in my opinion) Willy Boly clears off the line!

Billericay Wolf
11/08/2019 15:50
Has Cutrone done anything of note yet?

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:50
Willy Boly. What a player.

Lupy
11/08/2019 15:51
0-0.

Cheshire wolf
11/08/2019 15:52
All over 0 - 0 finish. Unfortunately we had our lead rubbed off through VAR.
A better result at Leicester than last season and a positive start!!

11/08/2019 15:58
Cutrone had some nice little touches in the limited time he played

Billericay Wolf
11/08/2019 16:00
Especially as they have had to travel over 6000 miles this week. Credible result.

Sorry Angry but didn't see your musings earlier. An interesting question, and it makes you wonder whether, if the ref or VAR Ref thought that was the case, they would be able to influence the decision. It seems they have been given these guidelines and must operate within them!! I can see it being frustrating for many fans but perhaps eventually will settle down. The only positive was how quickly the decision was made.

I think Jota had one of those days he will want to forget. Defence played well and Boly m.o.m.
Goal was correctly disallowed and it would have been the same if it had happened at the other end but what a stupid rule. Whichever fool thought that one up should be sacked asap.

The unspoken law in the past regarding handball was an intentional handball ( hand to ball ) was rightly penalised contrary to when the ball hits the arm and no movement is made towards the ball... why we cant keep to this to avoid confusion and keep common sense in the game I've no idea. You may recall the ridiculous penalty given to United in the CL vs PSG when the ball is blasted at the PSG player with no movement and a penalty is given in the last few minutes sending United through. Football should prioritise goals created via skill not technical decisions based on obsessing over the shape of a defenders torso with endless replays.

Regarding VAR I support it with pens as the "big clubs " with huge fan bases often influence the ref into giving dodgy decisions with the noise created imploring the ref to give the decision.. Ive lost count over the years how many penalties have been given at old Trafford/anfield vs smaller clubs when the challenge/foul was so innocuous VAR would have ruled a no pen decision

I’m in general favour of VAR, now it’s here and accept there will be teething problems but the disallowing of our goal today is truly pathetic and symptomatic the the extent of how far the law makers are prepared to go to make a mockery of football. I know the rule but How on earth could have Boly done anything / known / react to get his arm out the way? Pathetic ruling. How many Leicester players complained about our goal? Zero, is the answer.
As I said, I know the law but it is totally incomprehensible given the circumstances today. We won’t be the last side to fall foul of this nonsense, nor might it be our last.

Regarding Wolves' disallowed goal today, I totally agree with both of you. As I said, a stupid rule.

Just wait and see if they are as tough when it's City or Liverpool. Consistency is the key and rarely a strong point amongst referees

I wouldn't disagree with your general thinking Cedric, however in this case the adjudicating referee is sitting in a room somewhere miles from the game, and is not subject to any pressure from anyone to make a decision one way or another. The only constraint really I think is time.
