| The Amsterdam Arena is a new, multifunctional hi-tech stadium which is home to AFC Amsterdam Ajax. It also serves as a venue for Amsterdam American Football team "The Amsterdam Admirals" and is used for pop concerts. Opened on August 14th 1996 it seats up to 51,400 people under a sliding roof that can be opened or shut within 20 minutes. Has been plagued with pitch problems (insufficient sunlight for the grass to grow properly) with more than 17 new grass surfaces being worn out in the first 4 years. Many of the old Ajax fans were unhappy with the move to the new stadium - " lack of atmosphere", too much attention to the corporate hospitality facilities, and the F-side hard core of fans have had many disagreements with the director Mr. van Praag. Another unhappy point has been the use of the "Arena" token as the only means of payment for refreshments available in the Arena. In spite of these few problems, the Arena remains one of Holland's finest stadiums. |
