Leeds striker Mike Grella’s loan to Motherwell has been cancelled due to a FIFA ruling.
FIFA state that a player can sign for three teams in one year but can only play for two. Sadly for Motherwell Grella has played 34 minutes for Leeds earlier in the season and then a number of games on loan to Carlisle.
This was something that was missed yesterday and Motherwell have now had to make a U turn and allow the player to return to Leeds, knowing he can only play for his parent club or Carlisle.
This then had a knock on effect for young Well striker Robert McHugh who was being allowed to move on loan to Partick Thistle to aid his development and get him more game time.
When the Grella deal fell through he was immediately recalled! Hopefully we don’t find another striker or he will end up back out on loan again…..
It would appear this could only happen to Motherwell and no one else would get caught out with a piece of red tape like this! Let’s hope this ruling is checked if we sign anyone else on loan in the near future……
