Motherwell went ahead in the first half through Lukas Jutkiewicz but they were pegged back in the second half.
Aberdeen created the first real chance after only 13 minutes when John Ruddy saved at close range from a Lee Miller header, the play switched to the other end almost immediately for Well to take the lead.
The ball reached Jutkiewicz at the right edge of the box and he unleashed a low hard shot that beat Jamie Langfield at his near post for his fifth goal in six games.
It could've been two minutes later but Considine cleared off the line when Murphy had beaten Langfield with a neat lob.
Well then had to rely on Ruddy to keep them one ahead at half time when he saved at close range from a Paton shot from an acute angle.
Aberdeen came out like men possessed at the start of the second half and were much the better side ad deservedly pulled a goal back on 68 minutes when a Mulgrew corner reached McDonald at the back post to head past Ruddy.
Sadly for McDonald he earned a yellow card for his celebration, his second of the game after a foul only ten minutes earlier and the Dons were down to ten men.
Both sides had one more decent chance in the closing stages with Sutton bending a volley just over and Paton being denied by one more Ruddy save
