Motherwell's two nil defeat to St. Mirren on Saturdya put an end to their hopes of making the top six for the second successive season.
The defeat to St. Mirren summed up Motherwell's season, despite dominating possession for long spells they failed to take any of the chances or half chances created to see of the Buddies.
It was also a game that featured a strange team selection by Mark McGhee. He restored Stephen Craigan to the starting line up, which saw a re-shuffle of the defence and midfield.
Brian McLean moved to right back, with Paul Quinn moving to left back and Steven Hammell moving forward to left midfield - and I think we can safely say this experiment did not work.
Mark Howard was only really stretched once and that was as early as the 12th minute when he beat out a shot from David Clarkson. Apart from that it was either weak efforts easily saved or shots hit wide.
Then there were the two sucker punches at the end with Mark Reynolds making a hash of clearing a Craig Dargo cross and allowing Steven Thomson a tap in from close range.
Our fate was sealed with minutes left when Andy Dorman sent a stunning volley soaring past Graeme Smith.
That leaves us with five horrible fixtures to face between now and the end of the season. Looking at the fixtures today you can see the impact it will have on the club with only one Saturday home game, and a midweek game with Inverness to face at Fir Park, which could be a ghost town that night!
Upcoming fixtures;
2nd May - Falkirk away
9th May - St. Mirren away
13th May - ICT home
16th May - Hamilton, away
23rd May - Killie home.
