The attacking midfielder was most known for his eight-year spell at Preston North End where he scored 57 times with 36 assists in 336 appearances.

The 34-year-old also has international experience, featuring 26 times for Jamaica.

Johnson started out in youth ranks of Crystal Palace and Aston Villa, before playing for Yeovil, Chesterfield and Oldham.

After leaving Preston, he went to Stoke where he made 31 appearances scoring twice and providing two assists.

Johnson then headed to Turkey, playing 54 times for Fatih Karagumruk and scoring three times and getting eight assists.

The midfielder hasn’t made a competitive appearance since March but has been on trial at Barnsley.

Daniel Stendel said: "Bringing Daniel to the club is a positive for us. He brings great experience, playing the most of his career in the Championship and has been praised for his attitude and qualities he brings to the dressing room. We have a young squad, so players like Daniel who have experienced a lot in football can benefit our younger players and help their development.

"Having had DJ in the building on trial, my staff and I are excited to work with him and the rest of the squad to attack the rest of the season."
