The defender has agreed to a three-year deal with an option of a further year in the club’s favour. 

Gale started out at Arsenal as junior, before being released and joining Gillingham, progressing through their academy. 

He had loans at Sheppey United, Hastings United and Chelmsford City before establishing himself in the Gills starting XI. 

Gale was named Young Player of the Year at the Kent club for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons and was also nominated for EFL League Two Young Player of the season for 2025-26. 

Head Coach Daniel Stendel said: "We're very pleased to bring Sam to Barnsley. He is a young defender with excellent potential, but also someone who has already shown he can perform consistently in senior football. 

"He has a strong mentality, is comfortable on the ball and has the physical attributes we look for in a centre-back. We believe he can continue his development here and become an important player for this football club in the years ahead." 

Speaking to iFollow Barnsley, Gale said: "It's such a good opportunity, it's one I couldn't turn down. I want to be here, I want to get to work."
