The Reds Are Going Up

Barnsley promoted back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Promotion to the championship was confirmed with a game to spare with the super reds not even taking to the field last night.

Defeats for both Portsmouth and Sunderland meant that Daniel Stendel’s men secured promotion at the first time of asking and face no last day nerves of needing to win.

The League one title could even be secured on Saturday but that depends on us bettering the result of Luton Town.

Whichever way it goes, promotion is all that matters. Winning the title would be the icing on the cake but the most important part of the journey has already been completed.

The season overall has been fantastic and we certainly deserve to be back in the Championship with the way we have played for the majority of this season.

The focus on next season and the recruitment of new players and keeping hold of our current players will soon begin but now is the time for enjoyment and celebration and reflection on some terrific performances throughout the season.

The spine of the team have been exceptional. Mowatt was my choice for player of the year but I cannot argue with the choice of Pinnock either. Both have performed to Championship standard this season and have been pivotal in the success we have had.

Lindsay has also been superb alongside Pinnock and whoever has played in the middle with Mowatt, whether it be Dougall or McGeehan, they have also been terrific.

Davies, despite a few mistakes early on, has been in sensational form these last few months and at times has certainly kept us in the promotion race.

Up front the goals of Moore and Woodrow speak for themselves but the work rate of the pair of them along with the hold-up play of Moore have been top class.

I mentioned the spine of the team which I think has been the most pivotal part of the team but honourable mentions have to go to the wide players who have also played their part.

Thiam has had a good season, Brown’s goals and assists have been crucial and Cavare and Pinilos were much improved on the previous season. The two Williams’ will have their time and if Fryers can stay fit then there is lots of competition at full back.

Jackson can consider himself unlucky to play so few games at centre back and I also feel Hedges probably wasn’t used as much as he could have been.

Players that left in January also contributed to the cause as did a few others to a lesser extent than the ones above but everyone has played their part.

Go and win at Bristol Rovers on Saturday and with that will hopefully come the league title. If it doesn’t then it will have been a fantastic season no matter what and the celebrations should begin.
