Last season’s fifth place finish looked worlds away on Saturday when Arsenal ripped them apart time and again leaving fans with the fear of relegation rather than a top six finish.

All the speculation over Joleon Lescott hasn’t helped the squad but that cannot be used as an excuse for Saturday’s shambles.

However, Moyes believes that his side should be looking at getting back to basics.

"I think at the moment they have got to make sure that they achieve enough to do what they are good at - that's to make sure we are in the division," he told the Liverpool Daily Post.

"If they're getting carried away with themselves and thinking they're better than that at the moment then they have got to look after themselves because otherwise we'll be in trouble.

"I said on Friday that the first thing is to make sure we have enough points to avoid relegation and go on from there."
